Colin Bennett from Mason's Office of Sustainability begins planting in a new organic vegetable garden in the lower courtyard of the Potomac Heights residence building. Volunteers will tend the garden throughout the summer months.

IT Executive Alumnus Speaks at GMU Business Roundtable on June 23

The next meeting of the GMU Business Roundtable will be on June 23 from 7:45-9:00 a.m. at Access National Bank in Reston. The guest speaker will be Mason alumnus Don Rainey, MS Bioscience Management '08, general partner of Grotech Ventures. Among his many achievements, Rainey was recently appointed for a second term as an emerging technology consultant to the chief information officer at the U.S. Department of Defense through the DeVenCi program. Alumni Networking Social in Arlington on June 25

Alumnus Wins Walt Whitman Award for Poetry

The Academy of American Poets recently announced that J. Michael Martinez, MFA '06, has been selected to receive the 2009 Walt Whitman Award. The award is one of the most prestigious first-book prizes in the country.

 

Not only does the academy arrange to publish the winner's poetry collection, but it distributes the book to thousands of academy members. The award also includes a $5,000 cash prize and a one-month residency at the Vermont Studio Center, the largest international artists' and writers' residency program in the United States. MORE>

New Program Gets Campus Community Reading, Including Alumni

Fall for the Book, Northern Virginia's largest and oldest literary celebration, is launching a new program, Campus Community Reads. Alumni are encouraged to join Mason students, faculty, and staff members in reading novels over the summer months by two writers headlining the 2009 festival, Fairfax Prize winner E.L. Farmers' Market Continues on Campus through Summer

Mason Scientist Studies the Ultimate Cookie Monster

Black holes have been described as "the ultimate cookie monster." Lev Titarchuk, research professor in computational and data sciences in Mason's College of Science, recently developed an innovative technique that allows scientists to gauge how large or small a black hole may be. MORE>



Mason Community Donates More Than 1,100 Books to Charity

More than 1,100 books filling 46 boxes were collected this spring for Books for Africa through Better World Books. The Center for Leadership and Community Engagement, University Services, the George Mason University Bookstore, and Recycling and Waste Management collaborated to spearhead the project. MORE>



Music, AVT, and Dance to Become Schools

Keeping in line with other state university arts programs of the same size and stature, departments within Mason's College of Visual and Performing Arts will become individual schools this fall. The Departments of Music, Art and Visual Technology, and Dance will become the School of Music, the School of Art, and the School of Dance. MORE>


Professor's Research Focuses on Birds, Bees, and Elephants

Just as humans reveal much about themselves through their behavior, animals do the same. And for animal behaviorists such as Elizabeth Freeman, assistant professor in New Century College, any sneeze, dance, or stomp could be the key to unlocking the mystery behind why animals do what they do. Henderson Selected First Team All-America in Baseball

The Mason baseball team season ended when the Patriots were eliminated from the Greenville Regional of the NCAA Tournament, falling to Binghamton 11-6. During the tournament, Chris Henderson became the first Mason baseball player in school history to receive first-team All-America honors. MORE>

 


Men's Soccer Inducts Three New Members in Hall of Fame

The 2009 class into the Mason Men's Soccer Hall of Fame includes a pair of goalkeepers, Henry Castaneda (1971-1974) and John O'Hara (2001-2004), and forward John Kelly (1991-1994). With the induction of the 2009 class, the total number of members of the Men's Soccer Hall of Fame stands at 16. MORE>
