November 22, the Mason Alumni Association will host its annual
birthday celebration for the man who gave our university its name. This
year’s event marks Mr. Mason’s 283rd birthday.
Please join us for a fun and informative celebration at his home,
Gunston Hall Plantation. |

In
response to alumni requests for international travel, the Alumni
Association is offering a special tour of Tuscany May 21-30, 2009. The
trip includes two nights in Rome and six nights in Florence. Travelers
will enjoy guided tours of those cities and other breathtaking sights
in Pisa, Siena, San Gimignano, and the Tuscan wine country. This
fabulous small tour group will be composed of Mason alumni and friends;

Alumni
are invited to enjoy the 2008-09 Vision Series Lectures, which
highlight Mason faculty speaking on timely topics. The series is free
to the Mason community, but tickets are required. The next lecture is
October 6 with Jeremy D. Mayer, associate professor in the School of
Public Policy, and his topic is "Endgame: The Last Month in
Presidential Elections, This Year and Every Time." MORE> |

The
recent dedication of the first national monument to honor those who
lost their lives in the September 11 attacks represented nearly four
years of full-time volunteer work for Mason alumnus Jim Laychak, BS
Accounting '83 and BS Decision Sciences '83. He is president and
chairman of the Pentagon Memorial Fund, the fundraising arm for the
Pentagon Memorial. Laychak's brother, David, died when American
Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon. MORE> |

A new initiative called Mason Leads! is the
umbrella for a series of events from September 22–October 1
that are designed to celebrate leadership. A talk by author and ethics
scholar Rushworth M. Kidder and a panel discussion featuring veteran
observers of the Washington political scene will highlight the program.

This year, 1,450 Americans—six of
whom are Mason students or alumni—will travel abroad through
the U.S. Fulbright Student Award. The number of Mason scholars winning
the Fulbright award continues to increase, with one Mason scholar
selected in 2006 and three in 2007. MORE> |

Craig
Esherick, former head basketball coach for Georgetown University,
has joined Mason as a full-time instructor of sport management. In
addition to teaching courses, he will assist with Mason’s new
Center for Sport Management. MORE> |

Season
tickets for the 2008-09 Mason men's and women's basketball
seasons are now on sale. Full season plans include all 14
regular-season home games in the Patriot Center; mini-season packages
are also available. For a complete list of packages and prices, see the

Phillips, BS Information Technology '06 (pictured left), Maurice
Wignall, BA Psychology '01, and Cydonie Mothersill, all former Mason
