On the evening of April 14, the Alumni Association held its annual Celebration of Distinction to honor distinguished alumni in each of Mason’s schools and colleges and present their prestigious Alumni Association awards.

The 2010 alumna of the year is The Honorable Deborah A.P. Hersman, MS Conflict Analysis and Resolution `00.

Hersman was sworn in as the 12th chair of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) on July 28, 2009, following her nomination to the post by President Barack Obama and confirmation by the U.S. Senate.

Vice President Czarda to Assume Presidency of Greensboro College

Alumnus Lawrence Czarda, PhD `97, a mainstay at George Mason University since 1983 and current vice president for administration, is leaving to assume the presidency of Greensboro College, a private liberal arts college in North Carolina, beginning April 26. He will also hold the rank of professor of public administration.

“I am very excited at the opportunity to become part of Greensboro College,” says Czarda. “It presents a challenge and opportunity for me to help a fine institution with a 172-year history continue its own upward path, much as what we at Mason have been striving to do.”

“Larry will be missed by all of us,” says Mason President Alan Merten.  “In his many years at Mason he has worn many hats and has done extremely well in providing us with outstanding leadership. In my tenure as president, I have been blessed to have his council and support. We all have.”
