- ALL THREE CAMPUSES OF MASON ARE INTRODUCING THE NEW UNIVERSITY LOGO with light pole flags that welcome visitors to each campus. The banners are one way the university is welcoming the students and faculty back to begin a new academic year. The banners are also a great way to promote George Mason's new jaunty, green and gold, waving quill logo. The university's Creative Services team is responsible for the unique design of the banner.

- FOUR NEW MEMBERS WERE APPOINTED TO THE BOARD OF VISITORS by Governor Mark Warner. Harry Hopper of Alexandria, a partner at Columbia Capital; Carol Kirby of Manassas, former owner of Merchant's Incorporated; Roger Mody of McLean, founder and chairman of The Mody Foundation; and Ernest Volgenau of McLean, chairman and CEO of SRA International Inc. Each will serve a four-year term.

- THE MERCATUS CENTER, WHICH IS TUCKED AWAY ON THE ARLINGTON CAMPUS, is a little-known group that recently enjoyed national attention from a Wall Street Journal feature titled "Rule Breaker: In Washington, Tiny Think Tank Wields Big Stick on Regulation." Described in the article as "the most important think tank you've never heard of," Mercatus is a research, education, and outreach organization that works with scholars, policy experts, and government officials to connect academic learning and real-world practice.

- GEORGE MASON'S 13TH PATENT WAS RECENTLY AWARDED for "Adaptive Field Control of Epileptic Seizures" thanks to Steven Schiff and Bruce Gluckman, professors in the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study. The pair has developed a new way to treat seizures for those who suffer from epilepsy and Parkinson's disease.

- GEORGE MASON IS RANKED NUMBER ONE IN A SURVEY FOR DIVERSITY, completed by more than 110,000 students at 357 top colleges. The survey, released Monday, appears in the 2005 edition of the Princeton Review's annual college guide, The Best 357 Colleges. George Mason is also one of the 115 colleges named Best in the Mid-Atlantic by the review.

- GLOBAL STUDIES HAS SHIFTED INTO HIGH GEAR ever since President Alan Merten announced a university-wide initiative to increase global awareness among the student body at George Mason in the university's Plan for 2007. There has been a burgeoning of programs with the word "global" in their names. The newest addition to the effort is the Center for Global Studies (CGS), which was formally chartered last spring.

- THE SCHOOL OF PUBLIC POLICY AND THE SPP ALUMNI CHAPTER are sponsoring a special event, "CHILDREN @ RISK in an Era of Globalization," on October 22 in Dewberry Hall/Johnson Center on the Fairfax campus. A distinguished panel of speakers will include representatives from The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, The Enterprises for Hispanic Youth Foundation, and The U.S. Fund for UNICEF. This SPP Signature Event is for ticket holders only. Tickets are complimentary and available on a first come - first served basis for students, alumni, and faculty of George Mason University. - THE MASON MEN'S SOCCER TEAM was picked third in the 2004 Colonial Athletic Association Coaches Preseason Poll according to a vote of the league's 10 head coaches. Mason, which posted an 11-6-6 overall record last season, received one first-place vote and was third with 61 points. The Patriots return nine starters from a squad that reached the title game of 2003 CAA Men's Soccer Championship for the first time since 1995.

- THE WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM WAS SELECTED TO FINISH FIFTH in the Colonial Athletic Association for the upcoming 2004 season, tying Delaware with 45 points, in voting conducted by the league's 10 women's soccer head coaches. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.
