More than 4,000 students will be moving into
residence halls on the Fairfax campus this weekend.
AS PART OF HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH, the Alumni Association will again help sponsor a networking reception for alumni, faculty, staff, and students. The event will be held in the Alumni Atrium of Mason Hall from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 4. THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION WILL AGAIN OFFER HORSE-GUIDED TRAIL RIDES at the Marriott Ranch in Hume, Va., on Sunday, October 2. This popular event will include a lunch following the 10:30 a.m. ride. THE ALUMNI CHAPTER OF THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT will hold its first annual chapter picnic on Sunday, Sep. 25 from 3:00 p.m. to dusk at the Occoquan Regional Park in Lorton, Va.

THE BACHELOR OF INDIVIDUALIZED STUDY (BIS) DEPARTMENT AND ITS ALUMNI will celebrate 30 years of "learning without limits" (1975-2005) at a special event on Sunday, October 9 in the atrium of Mason Hall, starting with a reception at 5:00 p.m. and followed by a 7:00 p.m. performance of The Flying Karamazov Brothers in LIFE, A Guide for the Perplexedin at the Center for the Arts. Tickets are being sold for $57 per person and proceeds will support the BIS Program and Scholarship Fund. For more information, please call (703) 993-4556.

Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study GEORGE MASON'S KRASNOW INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDY announced that the Center for Social Complexity (CSC), best known for its extensive research projects in computational social science, has become the fourth center to join the Krasnow Institute.

THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT IS RAISING THE ROOF this summer-literally. Construction has begun on the structure that will house 15 new practice rooms in the courtyard of the Performing Arts Building. The completion of the practice space is expected in late October.

THIS FALL, THE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES (CAS) will roll out a new interdisciplinary minor program in Judaic Studies. As part of this initiative, the Department of Modern and Classical Languages will expand its foreign language offerings, in addition to the added offerings in Hebrew language training.

MICHAEL KIRBY, A RISING SENIOR AT MASON who is majoring in business and information technology, shot 6-under-par 138 at the Williamsburg, Va., Golden Horseshoe's Green Course to qualify for the 2005 U.S. Amateur Championship. His score tied with Chris Bagley, a rising sophomore at the University of Richmond. The championship will be played Aug. 22-28 at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa.

BOXING COMES TO THE GEORGE MASON PATRIOT CENTER for the first time on Saturday, Sept. 17, in an event that will feature Mason alumnus Mike Sawyer, BS Finance '05, in his professional debut. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., with the first bout scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Patriot Club THE PATRIOT CLUB GOLF TOURNAMENT will be held Monday, September 12 at Westfields Golf Club in Clifton VA. Registration begins at noon with shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. Cost per golfer is $300 ($150 is tax deductible) and includes greens fees, cart, range, lunch, drinks on course, cocktails and buffet dinner immediately following the event and a souvenir gift.
