Alumni Association Hosts Wine Tastings and Tours
Mason alumni and their guests are invited for a unique wine tasting experience on Saturday, September 22. This wine tasting event will include transportation by Reston Limousine coach bus with visits to Chrysalis Vineyards and Pearmund Cellars, and lunch at Hidden Horse Tavern in Middleburg, Va. Cost is $65.00 per person and includes wine tasting fees, lunch, and transportation. The event can only accommodate 30 guests who are 21 or older.

Regional Alumni Clubs Launch 'First Thursdays' Events
Alumni clubs in Denver, Hampton Roads (VA), and New York City have each launched a monthly networking event called "First Thursdays." Regional alumni in these areas can look forward to ongoing social and networking opportunities with fellow Mason alumni around the country.

Alumni Day at Orioles vs Yankees Home Game
The Alumni Association will host an Alumni Day at Oriole Park at Camden Yards as the Baltimore Orioles play the New York Yankees in a 1:35 p.m. game on Sunday, September 30 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore. Tickets are $15 each in section 360. Payment via check or credit card is accepted.

Mason's World Ball Project Works to Increase Geography Literacy
When Geography Department Chair Allan Falconer heard that Mason men's basketball coach Jim Larranaga gave his summer camp kids geography quizzes, Falconer thought: how could we mix geography facts and trivia with basketball and help increase kids' interest in the world? Together with Coach Larranaga, Falconer developed the idea for the World Ball - an NCAA-regulation basketball that is also a globe providing a correct scale representation of the location and areas of the continents.

Fall Brings New Class of Distinguished Faculty to Mason
The start of a new academic year is always exciting as a new class of students joins the university. Recruiting efforts of another kind come to fruition this fall as well, when scholars and researchers travel to Northern Virginia from around the world to join Mason's faculty ranks. Among the prestigious new hires this year are a former national museum director, an international terrorism expert, a sports broadcaster, a Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer and a noted documentary filmmaker.

Recycling Efforts Provide a Cleaner, More Eco-Friendly Campus
Ron Lim loves talking trash, but as the manager of recycling and waste management at Mason, he is really specific about what he means. One of the biggest challenges facing Lim and his crews in their efforts to keep Mason beautiful and environmentally responsible is people who don't recycle. The university began its recycling program with five buildings on the original Quad, two carts, and one worker. Now the program encompasses more than 40 buildings, 12 crew members, three classified employees, and a number of wage employees.

Nobel Winner Smith to Depart; Mason to Continue Experimental Economics Focus
Vernon Smith, professor of economics and law and 2002 recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, plans to leave Mason in January 2008 and join the faculty at Chapman University in Orange, Calif. Smith, 80, and a team of economists came to Mason in 2001 from the University of Arizona thanks to a $3 million grant from the Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation.

Mason Receives National Honor for Maintaining Safe Campuses
Mason was awarded the 2007 Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Award, which is presented annually by the nonprofit Security On Campus Inc. "in honor of schools that have done extraordinary things to make college university students safer." The safety award was created by the parents of Jeanne Clery, a student at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania who was murdered in 1986.

Men's Basketball Season to Begin Nov. 9 Against Vermont
In less than 9 weeks, the George Mason men's basketball team will begin practice for the 2007-08 season. While the schedule has not been finalized, the season opener has been set for Friday, November 9 when Mason hosts Vermont at the Patriot Center. Later in November, the Patriots will be the first team to open Colonial Athletic Association play when they host Drexel.

Three Patriots Set For USA Swimming Nationals
 As the nation's best swimmers descend on Indianapolis in the final championship before the 2008 Olympic Team Trials, three members of the George Mason community will be present to represent the Green and Gold. 2007 graduates Tom Koucheravy and Joe Houchin, along with volunteer assistant coach Kate Ziegler, will compete in the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships.

Mason Golfer Qualifies for U.S. Amateur Golf Championship
Nick DeSimone of Sykesville, Md. qualified for the 2007 U.S. Amateur Championship after he shot a one-under par two-round 141 at the Country Club of Fairfax at a sectional qualifier held on August 7th and 8th. The U.S. Amateur, the oldest USGA Championship, will be played from Aug. 20-26 at Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif. DeSimone is a 2007 graduate and four-year golf letter-winner at Mason.

Flasher Selected to Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star Game
Of all the summer college baseball leagues in the nation, none is more well-known or more prestigious than the Cape Cod Baseball League. That should only make the achievement of Mason rising junior Jordan Flasher all the more impressive as the Patriot closer was selected to the Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star game. Flasher has pitched in 16 games for Mason, finishing 15 of those contests.
