A BUS FULL OF MASON ALUMNI TRAVELED to Charlottesville, VA on Saturday, Dec. 3 to celebrate George Mason’s birthday by visiting the home of his compatriot, Thomas Jefferson. Recognition of George Mason’s birth is held each December by the Alumni Association and by the University.

MASON'S HOMECOMING KEEPS GETTING BIGGER AND BETTER and 2006 will be no exception. This year’s homecoming celebration is scheduled for February 6-11. The week will culminate with the 8th annual Block Party in Lot L adjacent to the Patriot Center. The theme for Homecoming 2006 is “I Mason”. Stay tuned for details on special events like the young alumni happy hour, a student leader alumni reception, and both the men's and women's basketball games, including a pre-game reception for the women's game.
IN 2003, THE BLACK ALUMNI CHAPTER SPONSORED ITS FIRST FOUNDERS’ DINNER to honor the twenty-three founders of the Black Alumni Chapter. This year the chapter expands on this event with a focus on scholarship fundraising to support Mason students. The event will be held on Saturday, February 11 on the Fairfax campus in Student Union Building II Ballroom with a reception from 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. followed by dinner. Tickets are $60 a person.

GET 'EM WHILE WE GOT 'EM! The Alumni Association is offering a limited number of Washington Capitals tickets for $25 each for the 7:00 p.m. game on Friday, February 3, 2006 against the Toronto Maple Leafs at MCI Center. EACH YEAR THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION RECOGNIZES outstanding alumni, students, and faculty at its annual Celebration of Distinction awards ceremony. Nominations are due no later than Monday, February 13, 2006. The opportunity to nominate someone for any alumni award is given to alumni, faculty and staff members, students, and friends of George Mason University. Jack Censer PROVOST PETER STEARNS HAS ANNOUNCED THAT JACK CENSER, chair of the Department of History and Art History, will be the dean of the new College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences (CLAHS).Censer’s three-year term will officially begin July 1, 2006, but he will begin immediately participating in decisions and policies affecting CLAHS.

THIS HOLIDAY SEASON, TATIANA ANDRONIKOVA is bringing a bit of her Russian roots back to the United States. After having been the accompanist to the Moscow State University Choir for 12 years, Andronikova, now an accompanist for George Mason, is bringing the choir to George Mason to perform in two holiday concerts.

ACCORDING TO THE LATEST STATISTICS compiled by the Office of Institutional Research and Reporting (IRR), George Mason's fall 2005 enrollment stands at 29,728, securing the university's status as the largest university in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Mason has 18,090 undergraduates, 10,896 graduate students, and 742 students in the law program.

GOV. MARK WARNER ANNOUNCED ON DEC. 7 THAT HE WILL INCLUDE $255 MILLION in his upcoming budget to develop and promote higher educational research facilities and faculty in Virginia. Among the new research facilities the funding package would support is a bioscience facility and a biocontainment laboratory at George Mason.

Carma HintonCARMA HINTON, AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKER, will join George Mason University in fall 2006 as a Clarence J. Robinson Professor, the Office of the Provost has announced. Hinton will have a joint appointment with the College of Visual and Performing Arts and the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences.

THE GEORGE MASON MEN'S GOLF TEAM WAS RANKED THIRD by the Mid Atlantic Region Golf Committee in the standings released after the fall campaign. The last time the team was ranked in the top five was during the 1996 season, when it was also ranked third. Mason's fall campaign was a very successful one, having won two tournaments and placing second in another two.

Jai LewisMASON'S MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM took on American University at the MCI Center on Dec. 5 in the 11th annual BB&T Classic and Mason set several tournament records while having its most dominant performance in nearly five years as the Patriots downed American, 75-35. For Mason, it was its 12th straight win over the Eagles.

Jen Daniels had a game-high 19 points at Brown. DESPITE 32 POINTS FROM ITS BENCH, the Brown women's basketball team dropped its second straight game with a 64-59 loss to George Mason on Saturday, Dec. 10, at the Pizzitola Center. Mason dominated the paint in the final two minutes of the game, getting back-to-back three-point play opportunities.

THE MEN'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM will begin its 2006 campaign on January 14 as the Patriots open the season against Lees-McRae at John Linn Memorial Gym at 4 p.m. That home match will be the first of 12 regular-season home dates for the Patriots who are expected to contend for the EIVA Tait Division title this year. Mason was voted second in the preseason poll of the conference's coaches behind Penn State, which has won the past seven EIVA Championships.
