CAPPING OFF A WEEK OF ACTIVITIES, THE HOMECOMING BLOCK PARTY AND COLLEGE ROW demonstrated true Mason Spirit as students, faculty, staff and alumni gathered in Lot L for pre-game festivities even as the snowflakes fell. Alumni and friends rallied together to cheer on the men's basketball team to their win against Towson.

KAPLAN TEST PREP AND ADMISSIONS INVITES MASON ALUMNI to participate for free in Grad School Week, February 28 – March 4, on the Fairfax campus. Come learn more about upcoming changes to the MCAT and GRE, and learn LSAT test-taking strategies from a Kaplan expert. Kaplan events are free and the week wraps up with a practice test on March 4.

THE MASTER'S OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION (MPA) ALUMNI CHAPTER WELCOMES ALL MASON ALUMNI to a seminar entitled "Marketing and Branding for Nonprofits and the Public Sector." An MPA alumna will discuss the tricks of the trade in regards to communications from within a nonprofit organization. This event will be held on Thursday, March 2 at 6:00 p.m. on the Arlington Campus, Original Building, Room 331. The event is free but RSVPs to Ann Ludwick at aludwick@gmu.edu are kindly requested.

THE SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT ALUMNI CHAPTER invites all SOM alumni to "United and Growing: The First Annual School of Management Alumni Summit" on Tuesday, March 28 at the Center for the Performing Arts on the Fairfax Campus. Enjoy a wine tasting and networking reception followed by distinguished speakers about the Mason and business communities. RSVP is needed by March 21.

THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION WILL HOST "ALUMNI/FAMILY DAY" as part of the final men's home basketball game versus JMU on Saturday, Feb. 25. Patriot Center doors open at 11:00 a.m. and the game starts at noon. Look for the Alumni Association at the South Entrance for free alumni giveaways and Mason spirit items to cheer on the men's team! Call the ticket office at (703) 993-3270 and mention the "alumni" discount for $6 tickets. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

A PROMINENT LEADER AND FOUNDER OF SEVERAL PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARIES and institutions, Richard Norton Smith will join the George Mason faculty this year. Smith, the director of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library in Springfield, Ill., will be a scholar-in-residence jointly in the Department of History and Art History and the School of Public Policy.

GEORGE MASON SCIENTISTS GIORGIO ASCOLI AND ALEXEI SAMSONOVICH in the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study announced their joint discovery of a new form of nerve cell homeostasis, or state of equilibrium. The findings, applied to mammalian nerve cells, have potential implications in the study and treatment of common debilitating diseases such as epilepsy, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, as well as development and aging.

MASON'S AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES PROGRAM welcomes Sandra Shannon, PhD, this semester as the 2006 African American Studies Scholar-in-Residence. Shannon will give a series of three lectures titled “Exploring the Dramatic Vision of August Wilson.” The first lecture takes place on Monday, Feb. 20, at 2:30 p.m. in Room 240 of the Johnson Center as part of the university’s celebration of Black History Month. Shannon will present the second and third lectures on March 27 and April 24, respectively.

Will Thomas had his third double-double of the season in Mason's win over Towson.
THE GEORGE MASON MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM opened the second half of the Homecoming game with an 11-2 run and beat the Towson Tigers 65-53 in front of the largest student crowd in school history. Mason remains in first place in the CAA and clinched a first-round bye in the CAA tournament with more than 1,700 students in attendance and a total of 6,443 fans.

TRACK SQUAD FRESHMAN JAVAN CORNIFFE POSTED THE FASTEST 400-meter dash time of his career, finishing the race in 49.47 seconds at the Tyson Invitational, held at the Randal Tyson Track Complex in Fayetteville, Ark. The time qualifies Corniffe for the IC4A Championships in Boston, Mass. on March 4-5. The men will compete along with the women at the Collegiate Open on Saturday, Feb. 18 at the George Mason Fieldhouse.

Joe Coughlin completed his second season at George Mason and is the returning starter at 125 pounds. THE WRESTLING TEAM SPLIT ITS FINAL TWO CONFERENCE DUAL MEETS of the season last week, winning 32-9 against Campbell and losing 34-14 to Old Dominion, to finish the season 6-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Patriots are 8-6 overall, while Campbell, with a pair of losses, falls to 5-11 overall and 2-5 in the CAA. ODU improves its record to 10-6-1 and 5-1-1 in the CAA with two victories.

Robby Jacobsen hit a solo homer to provide all of Mason's offense in Sunday's 11-1 loss to Oklahoma State.MASON'S BASEBALL TEAM CONCLUDED ITS SEASON-OPENING APPEARANCE at the Jaguar Invitational in Mobile, Ala. with a disappointing effort against Oklahoma State, falling to the Cowboys, 11-1. Mason returns to the field in search of its first win this Friday when the Patriots take on Pittsburgh at noon in a game played at Coastal Carolina.
