CVPA Alumni Chapter to Host 2nd Annual Career Night


The College of Visual and Performing Arts, along with the CVPA Alumni Chapter, will host its second annual Career Night on Wednesday, February 21, from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. in the Mason Hall Alumni Atrium on the Fairfax Campus. Attendees will hear from alumni panelists about various careers in addition to a complimentary dinner and networking event.

Alumni Invited to Submit Nominations for Annual Alumni Awards


Every year the Alumni Association recognizes outstanding alumni, students, and faculty at Celebration of Distinction, a dinner and awards ceremony. Top awards include the Alumnus of the Year, the Alumni Service Award, Faculty Member of the Year, and Senior of the Year. These awards are designed to recognize alumni, faculty, and students that are making a difference for Mason. In addition to awards presented, the Alumni Association will present four student scholarships. Alumni are invited to submit nominations.

Vision Series Lecture - "Air Transportation: A Tale of Prisoners, Sheep and Sociopaths"


George Donohue, professor of systems engineering and operations research and director of Mason's Air Transport Systems Research Center, will explain why current U.S. governmental policies are creating problems and what citizens can do about it in his lecture, "Air Transportation: A Tale of Prisoners, Sheep and Sociopaths," on Monday, January 29 at 8:00 p.m. The event is free but tickets are required.

University Celebrates Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on February 1


The Mason community will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Thursday, February 1, 2007, on the Fairfax campus. The day's events will begin with a read-in discussion of Dr. King's book, Where Do We Go From Here? in the Paul Robeson Room of the Johnson Center and a symbolic march at 1:00 p.m. from the Mason statue to Dewberry Hall where the main program will begin at 1:30 p.m. This year's program will feature a panel discussion moderated by Maureen Bunyan, anchor of ABC News 7. Alumni and all members of the local community are invited to join with faculty, staff and students for this annual celebration.

Critical Infrastructure Protection Program Examines Effects of 2005 Hurricanes


More than a year later, images of the 2005 hurricane season - when Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma battered Gulf Coast states - are still haunting. Mason's Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Program has been studying the effects of the 2004 and 2005 tropical storm seasons, especially the infrastructure damage caused by hurricanes in Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.

Mason Researchers Strive to Keep the Chesapeake Bay Clean


Located within the Chesapeake Bay watershed, George Mason University has long been home to a number of research studies aimed at improving the health of the bay and its tributaries. One of the latest efforts by Mason's Environmental Science and Policy (ESP) Department is directly focused on a crucial goal of the Chesapeake Bay Program's restoration effort: to significantly increase riparian forest buffers by 10,000 miles by 2010.

Mason Cited as a 'Best Buy' University


Two notable publications have recently cited Mason as being one of the top educational values in the nation. Mason is one of 247 schools listed in the ninth edition of Barron's "Best Buys in College Education." Mason's "best value" status was also commended in the February issue of Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine, where the school came in No. 78 in the country amongst public colleges.

Andrulis to Coach at Major League Soccer Combine


George Mason's head men's soccer coach Greg Andrulis was selected to coach one of the four teams that will compete against each other at the 2007 Adidas Major League Soccer (MLS) Player Combine Jan. 4 to 8 at Lockhart Stadium in Ft. Lauderdale. In 2006, Andrulis guided the Patriots to a fourth-place finish in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) and an overall record of 12-6-3 (7-3-1 CAA).

Kelley Named to Soccer America's Men's All-Freshman First Team


Freshman soccer goalie Sean Kelley added to his truckload of postseason awards as he was selected to Soccer America's Men's All-Freshman First Team. Kelley is the lone Colonial Athletic Association representative on the team. Throughout the season, Kelley was named CAA Rookie of the Week on three occasions (Sep. 11, Sep. 18 and Oct. 9) and was the only player in the league to be earn this honor more than twice.

Final Four Star Makes a Go of Pro Basketball Abroad


Nearly a year ago, Lamar Butler was on the cover of Sports Illustrated as George Mason advanced to the Final Four in men's college basketball. Now, the 2006 Mason graduate, who has a BA in Communication, is experiencing basketball in a much different way, far from the bright lights of a national television audience.

Coach Larranaga Receives AARP Impact Award


George Mason men's basketball head coach Jim Larranaga has been named one of 10 winners of AARP The Magazine's annual Impact Awards. AARP The Magazine is the world's largest circulation magazine, with more than 29 million readers. The Impact Awards honor Americans age 50 and older who make the world a better place. Other honorees include Robert DeNiro, David Hyde Pierce, and Valerie Harper.
