From the Campus Scene


The Northeast Sector project on the Fairfax Campus continues to grow and develop. A portion of the residence halls will open in August.


Prince William firefighters gather around a tree planted at the Prince William Campus in memory of their fallen comrade and Mason alumnus, Kyle Wilson, who graduated in 2005. Wilson died April 16 while fighting a fire.

MPA Alumni Host Night at Potomac Nationals Baseball Game


Master's of Public Administration (MPA) alumni and their guests are invited for a night of Potomac Nationals baseball and fireworks this Saturday, July 21! Join fellow alumni at the minor league team of the Washington Nationals as they play the Salem Avalanche. Fireworks will follow the ninth inning.

Denver Alumni Invited to Colorado Rapids Home Game


Mason alumni in the Denver area are invited to an Alumni Day event at a Colorado Rapids game! The Rapids will battle the New England Revolution in an 8:00 p.m. game on Thursday, August 16. There will be a pre-game gathering at The Cantina, located on the South concourse between gates "D" and "E". Early entry will be granted for Mason alumni and their guests.

Twilight Canoeing Trip at Mason Neck State Park


Explore the natural diversity and history of Kane's Creek and Belmont Bay with other Mason alumni from a flat water canoe on Saturday, August 18! While on the trip, alumni and their guests will have the chance of spotting a bald eagle, osprey, heron, and other wildlife. The trip will be lead by a Mason alumnus and park volunteer. Former Mason Standout Named Interim Head Coach of Chicago Fire


Former George Mason men's soccer standout Denis Hamlett has been named interim head coach of the Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer. Hamlett, in his tenth season on the bench for the Fire, takes over for Dave Sarachan who was relieved of his coaching duties after the Fire started the season 1-6-1. Hamlett, an All-CAA and All-Region athlete as a senior with the Patriots, was the 12th overall selection in the league's inaugural 1996 Draft. Hamlett has been a member of the Chicago Fire coaching staff since the team's inaugural season in 1998.

Association Announces Board of Directors for 2007-08


The Alumni Association is pleased to announce that new members have been elected to its Board of Directors of the 2007-08 year. Additions include Rodney Turner, VP for Advocacy; Tom Dundzila, Secretary; and Directors-At-Large include Susan Hardenburgh, Christopher McGowan, and Dennis Pereira. Mason Brings Advanced Degree Programs to Hospitals


With the average registered nurse in a health care facility facing 12-hour shifts, more acutely ill patients and competing priorities, finding time for advanced education is difficult. To address this issue, Mason's academic outreach programs have responded with innovative, user-friendly, on-site courses for nurses who want to pursue graduate study. Mason registers more than 200 nurses each semester in courses that occur right in their workplace. Currently, Mason offers graduate courses at 12 health care organizations in the Washington, D.C., region.

New Minor Explores Science within Everyday Life


The popularity of top-rated TV programs like "CSI" and the Oscar-winning documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" demonstrate that science is embedded in popular culture. Reflecting this trend, Mason has developed a new academic minor to examine the myriad ways science and society intersect. Beginning this fall, Mason students will have the opportunity to explore the impact of science in their daily lives by pursuing a minor in Science and Society.

Responding to a study estimating a quadrupling of individuals suffering from Alzheimer's disease by 2050, Mason professor Andrew Carle, assistant professor and director of the Program in Assisted Living/Senior Housing Administration at Mason, has released a list of the best "brain games" available for those seeking to maximize cognitive function.

UVA Invites Mason to Join Alliance for Increasing Minority Engineering Graduates


The University of Virginia will lead a cooperative program among eight colleges and universities throughout Virginia, including George Mason, and North Carolina that will focus on increasing the number of students from underrepresented groups who pursue degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The initiative's primary goal is to double the average number of students from underrepresented minority populations graduating from the alliance schools.

Weiss, Wiggins Make Baseball All-Star Teams


George Mason shortstop Brent Weiss and centerfielder Spencer Wiggins are two of the many George Mason players participating in summer league baseball but the pair made themselves stand out last week as they were selected to their respective league's All-Star games. Weiss, playing for the Wilmington Stars, was selected to the Coastal Plains All-Star game. Wiggins, a member of the Haymarket Senators, played in the Valley League All-Star contest.

Pachella Runs at the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships


Rising sophomore Michael Pachella, who specializes in the 800-meter run for the George Mason men's track and field team, competed in his signature event at the 2007 Finish Line USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships this past week in Indianapolis. The championships were the qualifying meet for the 2007 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships, with the top-two finishers in each event eligible for selection to the Team USA junior roster.

Rowing Coach Dillard Invited to Coach at US Rowing Camp


George Mason's women's rowing coach Geoff Dillard has been invited to coach this summer at the Mid-Atlantic Region US Rowing Senior Women's Development Camp hosted by Thompson Boat Center in Washington, DC. Dillard will be coaching high caliber athletes, both collegiate and post-collegiate, that are looking to develop their skills and physical ability in preparation for U23 Trails and Senior National Team competition.

Ziegler Breaks Swimming's Oldest World Record


Kate Ziegler just keeps on winning races and setting records. Ziegler, who enrolled as a freshman at Mason last fall, broke swimming's oldest world record on June 17 in Mission Viejo, Calif. She won the 1,500-meter freestyle at the TYR Meet of Champions with a time of 15:42.54. That shattered the mark of 15:52.10 set in 1988 by former American Olympian Janet Evans of California.
