UNIVERSITY NEWS

  • THE ATRIUM IN MASON HALL HAS BEEN RENAMED "ALUMNI ATRIUM" in recognition of the thousands of George Mason alumni who have contributed to The Campaign for George Mason University. A plaque has been mounted in the atrium to honor those alumni who made gifts and commitments at the President's Circle level ($1,000 and above) during the Leadership Phase of the Alumni Campaign, a special initiative conducted during 2002-03. The Campaign for George Mason University has raised more than $116 million in private support to date.

  • GRADUATE STUDENTS RECENTLY REPORTED HIGH SATISFACTION WITH THEIR GEORGE MASON EXPERIENCE. More than 91 percent of exiting George Mason graduate and law students said they would recommend the academic programs to which they belonged to others, according to the annual Graduate Student Exit Survey (GES) Report for the 2002-03 academic year. This is the highest percentage in four years.

  • Model of 9/11 Memorial

  • TOM ASHCRAFT, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF ART AND VISUAL TECHNOLOGY AND COORDINATOR OF THE SCULPTURE PROGRAM, has been commissioned to create a public outdoor sculpture in memory of five people from University Park, Md., who died during the attacks on the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.

  • THE FREEDOM AQUATIC AND FITNESS CENTER AT THE PRINCE WILLIAM CAMPUS has been named the 2003-04 Business of the Year by the Prince William County-Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce. The center took top honors in the category for chamber members with 16 or more employees.

  • GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY MOVED UP THREE SPOTS TO #12 on the Peace Corps' mid-Atlantic region's list of the top 20 volunteer-producing colleges and universities, and it is in the top 100 nationally. Currently, there are 25 George Mason alumni serving overseas, up 25 percent from 2003. More than 134 George Mason graduates have served or are serving worldwide since the Peace Corps was established in 1961.

PATRIOT SPORTS

  • BASEBALL PLAYER JEFF PALUMBO IS NAMED CAA SCHOLAR-ATHLETE OF THE YEAR. While at George Mason University, senior shortstop Jeff Palumbo dedicated himself to being the best both on the baseball field and in the classroom. On Monday, he was recognized for his dual excellence when he was named the Colonial Athletic Association's Scholar-Athlete of the Year for Baseball.

  • EVEN THOUGH ALYCE WILLIAMS WASN'T AT THE TOP OF HER GAME AT THE NCAA TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS in Austin, Texas, she still managed to put up a few good jumps. While she failed to make the finals of the triple jump, she did enough to finish 17th out of the 28 competitors in the field.
