UNIVERSITY NEWS

  • THE NEW IKE'S IN THE EISENHOWER COMMONS RESIDENCE HALLS opened last week and served a hungry crowd of 300. The diner-style facility features breakfast and lunch foods, with an emphasis on meal plan combos. Open 9 p.m. to 4 a.m., it's the first dining facility of its kind at George Mason, with a jukebox and 1950s style.

  • THE KRASNOW INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDY continues its spring Seminar Series with seminars that are free and open to the public. They are held at 4 p.m. each Monday in Room 229 of the Krasnow Institute on the Fairfax campus. Speakers are scheduled for April and May.

  • PRINCE WILLIAM CAMPUS LIBRARY IS NAMED TO HONOR MASON'S MENTOR. When staff members at the Prince William campus library recently rearranged shelves and added new ones to accomodate a growing collection, they were unwittingly preparing for another change of a different nature. The University's Building Naming Committee announced that the library will be known as Mercer Library, named for Virginia colonist John Mercer, George Mason's uncle and guardian.

  • THOMAS JEFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL AND GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY are joining forces to explore ways to improve educational opportunities for students who attend the prestigious Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology. University President Alan Merten and Daniel Domenech, Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent, made the announcement.

  • NATIONAL STUDENT EXCHANGE (NSE) is now an option for students since the University recently joined the NSE Program, an organization with 177 member campuses internationally. Beginning in the fall semester, Mason students will be eligible to study at one of the member campuses while paying the tuition and fees of their home institution.

  • MASON GROUP HITS THE MOJAVE DESERT ON A DARPA CHALLENGE. It sounds like another guise for a reality television show: race through nearly 200 miles of rugged terrain on a predetermined course through difficult and sometimes unexpected conditions, in less than 10 hours, for a $1 million prize. But the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) couldn't be more serious. For this race, what DARPA is calling the Grand Challenge, no humans are allowed behind the wheel; these vehicles must drive themselves.

  • THE DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING (ECE) will celebrate the 20th anniversary of its founding on April 9 from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm. The event will include a morning session featuring talks about the founding of the department, its progress and plans, as well as learn about the faculty's accomplishments. There will be several presentations describing research in the areas of signal processing, system architectures, high speed networks and network security.   • Potomac Heights Residence Halls

  • CONSTRUCTION CONTINUES TO BOOM ON THE FAIRFAX CAMPUS as the Potomac Heights residence halls (pictured here) and the Sandy Creek Parking Deck look toward openings in fall 2004 and spring 2005 respectively. This fall, Potomac Heights will add 500 more beds on the Fairfax campus and the parking deck will generate 1200 new parking spaces. Check out the latest construction photos!

  • RESULTS OF THE ONLINE ALUMNI SURVEY have returned and the survey was a great success! The response rate of 14% provides helpful information that will guide the Alumni Association in future planning. The Association will periodically update the alumni body on the progress of objectives derived from the survey. A full summary will be forthcoming in the May edition of the Mason Spirit magazine.   • Virginia Gold Cup Races, Sixth Race, May 3, 2003

  • THE 79th RUNNING OF THE VIRGINIA GOLD CUP RACES WILL BE SUNDAY, MAY 1 at Great Meadow in The Plains, VA. The Alumni Association will host a tent on the South Rail Side of the race track. Car passes will be sold in April through the Alumni Association. Anyone interested in reserving a $75 car pass should contact Darren Silvis (dsilvis@gmu.edu) in the Office of Alumni Affairs.   • INITIATIVES IN EDUCATIONAL TRANSFORMATION (IET), George Mason's innovative, professional development graduate program for practicing K-12 teachers, will host cultural anthropologist Mary Catherine Bateson as she shares her reflections and discoveries related to multigenerational life histories in “Composing Overlapping Lives,” on Saturday, March 27, at 1:30 p.m. in the Verizon Auditorium at the Prince William Campus.   • THE STUDENT ALUMNI CHAPTER IS HOSTING A TOUR AND OPEN HOUSE on Saturday, April 24, at 2:00pm on the Fairfax campus. This is a great opportunity for alumni to re-familiarize themselves with the campus, interact with current students, and learn more about the Alumni Association and its chapters! The tour will be followed with light refreshments and an Alumni Association open house.   • THE HISTORY & ART HISTORY ALUMNI CHAPTER invite all to their spring event on Saturday, May 22 at Hillwood Museum and Gardens in Washington, DC. Hillwood opened to the public in 1977 and holds Marjorie Merriweather Post's extensive collection of 18th and 19th century Russian Imperial Art, as well as her formidable collection of 18th century French decorative arts.   • MEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO OREGON IN NIT SECOND ROUND. The Patriots fell to the Oregon Ducks on Tuesday in a 68-54 contest at McArthur Court, the second-oldest Division I facility in the nation behind Fordham's Rose Hill Gym. An 8-3 run put George Mason up 22-21 seven minutes before halftime, but its lead was short-lived thanks to a 16-2 outburst by the Ducks that put them ahead 37-24 with 2:12 to play in the first half. The Patriots' sophomore center Jai Lewis scored on consecutive possessions to cut the Ducks' lead, but Oregon went into halftime up 39-28.

  • DIANE DRAKE IS HIRED AS WOMEN'S SOCCER HEAD COACH. Drake, Georgetown University's winningest soccer coach, has been hired to lead the Patriots. Athletics Director Tom O'Connor praises Drake on her five seasons at Georgetown and expresses excitement that she will be leading the women Patriots on the soccer field.

And for the 15th time in the last 16 years, at least two Mason student-athletes have found themselves in the national spotlight.

  • ALYCE WILLIAMS IS NAMED ALL-AMERICAN IN THE TRIPLE JUMP. Williams, who is in her second season at Mason, was disappointed last year when she missed the cut to qualify for the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships by one place. This year, she received an invitation and made the most of her experience.
