  • AFTER AN EXHAUSTIVE LETTER WRITING CAMPAIGN from various units at the university, Champs sporting goods stores will now carry George Mason University merchandise! The Alumni Association partnered with Athletics and Student Government to encourage area retailers to sell Mason merchandise. They lobbied several retailers about the increasing demand of Mason gear that extends beyond the university and its bookstore.

  • IN CELEBRATION OF THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF INTERNATIONAL WEEK at George Mason University, the Alumni Association and Student Alumni Chapter, Office of International Programs and Services, and the International Student Umbrella will host an International Alumni Reunion and Reception on April 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Alumni Atrium of Mason Hall. It will provide alumni an opportunity to reconnect with old friends and meet current students involved in carrying on the legacy of International Week. A retrospective exhibit of the past 25 years is planned for this year's International Week, and your memories and experiences as an international student are requested.

  • Caryn Groedel

  • STUDENTS SEARCHING FOR A JOB AFTER LAW SCHOOL should no longer feel restricted to the Job Bank on eAttorney — CBS is hiring George Mason School of Law grads. Caryn Groedel, a 1985 law graduate, is a cast member on CBS' 10th season of Survivor. Groedel, 46, born and raised in New York City, completed her undergraduate work at George Washington University and was a night student at Mason while working as a legal secretary.

UNIVERSITY NEWS

  • GEORGE MASON WILL OPEN ITS FOURTH CAMPUS in fall 2006 in Ras-Al-Khaimah (RAK), located in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The first cohort will include approximately 200 students, with a goal of growing to more than 2,000 students in the next 10 to 15 years. Campus construction will begin immediately. A signing ceremony was held February 28 in RAK.

  • Women's Studies Research and Resource Center

  • MARCH IS WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH, and the university celebrates this year's theme, "Women Change America," by hosting a variety of authors, educators, leaders, and professionals who have made an impact nationwide. Sponsored by the Women's Studies Research and Resource Center, events include lectures, readings, workshops, films, and art exhibits, all held on Mason's Fairfax Campus.

    Mason@Loudoun

  • GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY IS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN HOLDING CLASSES in Loudoun County this fall. These course offerings will connect students in one of the fastest growing areas in the nation to Virginia's largest public university. Mason@Loudoun will offer courses and programs in information technology, management, nursing, health science, education, and social work, along with undergraduate general education courses.

  • MENAS KAFATOS, DEAN OF THE SCHOOL OF COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCES, has been reappointed for another three years. Kafatos has been working closely with Daniele Struppa, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), on a proposal for the university to create two separate colleges—a college of science to be formed by merging the CAS science departments with the School of Computational Sciences, and a college of humanities, social sciences, and interdisciplinary studies.

Mary Campioli was honored as the Outstanding Diver of the CAA Championships.
  • GEORGE MASON WOMEN CAPTURED THEIR FOURTH CONSECUTIVE CAA SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS at the Jim McKay Natatorium on the campus of George Mason University. George Mason edged Towson in what was the closest meet in the 20-year history of the championship. The Patriots edged Towson 583-581 to claim its fourth straight team title. On the men's side, UNC Wilmington scored 680 points over the four-day event for its fourth team title in a row while George Mason was runner-up with 635 total points.

  • THE GEORGE MASON GOLF TEAM opened their spring season at the 5th annual Winthrop-Waterford Invitational, March 13-15. The 36-hole event is played at Waterford Golf Course in Rock Hill, S.C. The team will play in three additional tournaments before the CAA Championships April 14-17 at the Homestead Resort in West Virginia, and then finish out the season at the Penn State Rutherford Intercollegiate, April 28-30.

  • Marc Kellman became an All-American on Saturday when he finished fifth in the triple jump at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

  • A TRIO OF MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETES will be returning to Fairfax, Va. from the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships with "All-American" attached to their name. Senior Marc Kellman, sophomore Ryan McCoy and senior Richard Phillips earned All-American status on Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark. Kellman was fifth in the triple jump, McCoy was eighth in the triple jump and Phillips was eighth in the 60-meter hurdles.

  • MASON ALUMNI CAN JOIN THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT for a 5k run in honor Aimee Willard, a former player who lost her life to a brutal act of violence. This year’s event will feature keynote speaker Ann Seymour, co-founder and senior advisor of the D.C.-based non-profit Justice Solutions. Aimee Willard Memorial 5K Fun RunRace day is April 24 and registration begins at 9:00 a.m. and the start is at 10:00 a.m. at the field house on the Fairfax campus. The entry fee is $25 and includes a t-shirt, post-race lunch, raffle ticket, and a goodie bag. Interested runners should contact Stephanie Morehead at smorehea@gmu.edu.
