- A TOTAL OF 6,298 GRADUATES BECAME ALUMNI last Saturday at Mason's 37th annual Commencement ceremony at the Patriot Center. Edwin Meese III, Board of Visitors rector and former U.S. attorney general, addressed the graduates. The Alumni Association congratulated graduates with gift bags.

- GRADUATE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION'S NEW NAME was recently approved by the Board of Visitors to become the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD). Dean Jeff Gorrell notes that the new name is the direct result of the expansion of academic programs and other offerings in the Graduate School of Education in recent years.

- SANDRA HUBLER HAS BECOME THE NEW VICE PRESIDENT FOR UNIVERSITY LIFE after students, faculty, and staff interviewed 5 candidates on the Fairfax campus. She currently is the vice president for student affairs and enrollment at Menlo College in California. Karen Rosenblum, the current VP, is stepping down to return to the Mason faculty ranks. She has been VP for seven years.

- THE DEMOCRACY PROJECT AT MASON is a multi-campus initiative that seeks to create an intellectual and experiential understanding of civic engagement for undergraduates enrolled at institutions that are members of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU). - THEY'RE HERE! CICADAS HAVE SWARMED OVER THE REGION and George Mason University experts are among the few to anxiously greet these insects. The area of Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., is expected to be hit heavily by this particular brood starting in mid-May. This brood, of which there are six known species, is found only in the Eastern United States and nowhere else in the world.

- PATRIOT WEB is simplifying the lives of students, faculty, and staff. For years, students have registered for classes via the 4-GMU phone system. - MASON ALUMNI, STUDENTS AND FACULTY were honored at the annual Celebration of Distinction. The George Mason University Alumni Association hosted its annual Celebration of Distinction awards dinner April 21 in the Johnson Center Dewberry Hall. Each year, the association, along with several schools and colleges, recognizes and honors outstanding alumni, students, and faculty members for their achievements and contributions to the university.

- CREATING A UNIVERSITY IS HARD WORK, especially at the age of 82! Buu T. Le will be traveling back to Vietnam instead of walking in George Mason University's commencement ceremonies. At 82, Le is George Mason's oldest graduate this year. A Vietnamese man who spent 13 years surviving in a concentration camp, Le earned his PhD in Cultural Studies from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) in August 2003.

- SPRING SPORTS SEASON HAS MANY HIGH POINTS, INCLUDING INCREASED FAN ATTENDANCE AND A NEW LOGO! The George Mason athletic program finished the spring 2004 semester on a high note, with a host of teams earning slots in a slew of tournaments and others advancing even further to set new university records. "We are very proud of the accomplishments of our student-athletes on the field," says Tom O'Connor, assistant vice president and director of athletics. "Most of our spring sports teams were in the top half of the CAA [Colonial Athletic Association] standings."

- PATRIOTS ADD JORDAN CARTER TO NEXT YEAR'S BASKETBALL RECRUITING CLASS. Men's Head Coach Jim Larranaga announced that Jordan Carter, an Indianapolis native, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Patriots beginning as a freshman during the 2004-05 season. Larranaga has already posted four new players to next year's team.

- WOMEN'S SOCCER PLAYER RECEIVES ALL-STATE HONORS. Sarah Coughlin, a junior on the George Mason University women's soccer team, earned her fourth postseason honor this season after being named to the Virginia College Sports Information Directors (VaSID) 2003 University Division All-State Women's Soccer Team, as voted on by members of the association.
