  • WITH THE CLASS OF 2005, GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY HAS GRADUATED ITS 100,000TH ALUMNUS. While the university has awarded many more than 100,000 degrees because a large number of alumni have earned more than one degree from Mason, this graduating class marks the university's official move into the six digits.

  • CALLING ALL UNDERGRADUATE ALUMNI FROM THE SUMMER AND FALL OF 1999 AND SPRING OF 2000... it's been five years since you earned your Mason degree and the university would like to hear from you! Would you like to share special accomplishments or interesting work places since you graduated? Kindly take a few moments to complete an online survey designed by the Office of Institutional Assessment.   • SEAN SOKLER, A 24-YEAR OLD FROM ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA, became the first autistic student to graduate from Mason. Sokler earned a degree in psychology and while he applied to schools like Princeton, Georgetown, and George Washington universities, he was happy to choose Mason because of the support he was given.   • GEORGE MASON'S BOARD OF VISITORS (BOV) VOTED ON MAY 11 TO REORGANIZE the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) and the School of Computational Sciences (SCS), with the result being a newly formed College of Science (COS) and College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences (CLAHS). The two new colleges will be financially effective July 1, 2006, and programmatically effective fall semester 2006.

  • National Cancer Institute

  • USING A NEW TYPE OF PROTEOMIC TECHNOLOGY, SCIENTISTS AT MASON AND THE NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE (NCI) have identified a hyperactive network of cancer cell proteins that may lead to a strategy to boost the survival rate for children suffering from rhabdomyosarcoma, a highly aggressive form of childhood cancer. Rhabdomyosarcoma is the cause of more than 50 percent of soft-tissue cancers in children and accounts for 5-8 percent of all childhood cancers.

  • A NEW BOOK PUBLISHED BY THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR HIGHER EDUCATION (AAHE) CITES GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY as a model institution with policies and practices that are especially powerful in helping students succeed in college. Student Success in College: Creating Conditions that Matter discusses 20 colleges and universities across the country chosen several years ago to participate in the study Project DEEP (Documenting Effective Educational Practices).

  • RESEARCH THAT BEGAN IN 1997 WHEN JAMES WYNNE WAS WORKING ON HIS DOCTORAL DEGREE with chemistry professor Wayne Stalick has brought George Mason a patent for a process to synthesize gamma-carbolines. These compounds can be used in a variety of pharmaceutical applications and to treat neurodegenerative diseases.

  • FIVE STUDENTS from the School of Public Policy (SPP) and two students each from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution (ICAR) and the School of Law were named finalists for the Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) program, one of the federal government’s most prestigious academic honors. Several students have already earned coveted federal jobs as a result.

Patriot Club
  • THE PATRIOT CLUB WILL HOST THE 18TH ANNUAL ALUMNI ATHLETE GOLF OUTING at Evergreen Country Club in Haymarket, Virginia on Monday, June 6 with an 11:00 a.m. shotgun start. Join fellow alumni for a day on the golf course with former teammates and coaches, remembering all the good times on and off the field. Online registration is available.

  • Senior Josh Morrison picked up the win for the Patriots in the regular-season finale, downing James Madison, 5-3.

  • THE PATRIOTS MEN'S BASEBALL TEAM (33-17, 15-9) WILL BE THE NO. 2 SEED in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament, which begins today in Wilmington, N.C. All games can be seen live on the Internet at www.caasports.com. The Patriots were able to clinch a second-place finish in the CAA regular-season standings as Mason defeated James Madison University, 5-3, on Senior Day, May 22, at Spuhler Field in Fairfax.

  • Mike Garner won the 100m and 200m dashes at the 2005 IC4A Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

  • EACH TIME MASON GRADUATE SOCIOLOGY STUDENT MIKE GARNER ran the 200m dash this season, he finished the event at a faster pace than his previous attempt, cutting off ten-hundredths of a second with each race. His persistence finally paid off as Garner captured the 200m dash individual title in a personal best and NCAA East Regional qualifying time of 20.90 at the 129th Annual Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America (IC4A) Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Princeton on Sunday, May 15.

  • JUNIOR MICHELE BRADY (FAIRFAX, VA/PAUL VI) AND SENIOR MEG DENTLER (CROFTON, MD/ARUNDEL) were among 32 players named to the 2005 Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association/US Lacrosse (IWLCA/USL) Division I South all-Region team, which was announced Wednesday (May 18) by Amy Umbach, head coach at George Mason and chair of the IWLCA South Region committee. Dentler also received All-American honors for the second straight season.

  • THE NATIONAL WRESTLING COACHES ASSOCIATION (NWCA) announced on May 10 its Top 30 Division I All-Academic Teams and George Mason made the elite list, ranking eighth overall and marking its first top 10 finish. This is the second consecutive season Mason's wrestling team joined the all-academic rankings, jumping ahead nine spots and making a significant improvement from last year's 17th-place showing. Other teams in the top 10 include Brown, Princeton, Stanford and Columbia.
