THE FAIRFAX CAMPUS WAS AWASH IN A SEA OF GREEN under sunny skies on Saturday as the class of 2006 processed from the Johnson Center to the Patriot Center for Commencement. The university graduated 6,803 students with 3,843 bachelor’s degrees, 2,505 master’s degrees, 190 doctoral degrees and 265 law degrees. Scott Cowen, president of Tulane University in New Orleans, was this year's commencement speaker.

IN KEEPING WITH ITS DISTRIBUTED UNIVERSITY PLAN, George Mason will soon have "distributed" cultural arts in the form of a new community performing arts center at the Prince William Campus. Like the Center for the Arts on the Fairfax Campus, the new community performing arts center will offer a range of facilities to accommodate world-renowned performers as well as local productions, educational and social events and business and community meetings.

THE RELEASE OF THE MOVIE "THE DA VINCI CODE," based on the popular bestseller by Dan Brown, is getting a lot of attention because of its religious themes and theories on early Christianity and the Holy Grail. Sheila ffolliott, professor of history and art history, and Whitney Shiner, associate professor of Christian origins, shared their thoughts on the truths and liberties behind this story.

THE RECIPIENTS OF THE 2006 GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY TEACHING AWARDS have been announced and were honored at a reception last week. The winners of the 2006 Teaching Excellence Award are: Charlene Douglas, College of Nursing and Health Science; Michelle Marks, School of Management; Jane McDonald, College of Education and Human Development; Victoria Rader, Department of Sociology and Anthropology; and Andrew Wingfield, New Century College.

GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY'S BOARD OF VISITORS, in its final regular meeting of the year, voted unanimously to raise tuition and fees and room and board rates for in-state, undergraduate students by 6.5 percent for the upcoming 2006-07 academic year. This increase represents a hike from $12,360 to $13,158. Overall, this increase is among the smallest of Virginia’s four-year colleges and universities.

GEORGE MASON SCORED 59 TEAM POINTS TO WIN THE IC4A TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP at William Weaver Track and Field Stadium in Princeton, N.J., on May 14. The Patriots finished first in four events on the final day of action to capture the team title. Mason beat Cornell University, who finished second with 51 points, and the University of Pennsylvania, who finished third with 48 points.

THE GEORGE MASON WOMEN'S TENNIS TEAM wrapped up the season with a 7-0 win against Catholic at home on Senior Day, ending a record 14-win season. Mason says "good-bye" to senior co-captains Andreea Fusea and Jenn Dektas who ended their season on high notes with victories in both singles and doubles. "Jenn and Andreea will be sorely missed for their off court as well as their on court abilities," said Head Coach Steve Curtis.

JUNIOR TOM KOUCHERAVY EARNED THE HONOR OF Colonial Athletic Association Male Swimmer of the Year for the second year in a row as announced by the league office and was voted on by the head coaches of the conference. Koucheravy took first place in the 200, 500 and 1650-yard freestyle at the CAA Championship in leading the Patriots to a second-place finish.
