ALUMNI ASSOCIATION NEWS
- THE STUDENT ALUMNI CHAPTER HOSTED AN ETIQUETTE DINNER sponsored by GEICO Direct on Wednesday, November 3. Twenty-five students and six alumni participated in the evening event that included a 3-course meal and discussion on dining etiquette. Undergraduate and graduate students from various majors took advantage of this opportunity to learn more about dining etiquette and to meet and mingle with alumni.

- EACH YEAR THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION PRESENTS AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS to students, faculty, and alumni at its Celebration of Distinction. You are encouraged to nominate fellow alumni for the Alumnus of the Year and/or Alumni Service Award. The Alumnus of the Year award is given annually to recognize distinguished alumni achievements that have served to bring honor to George Mason University. The Alumni Service award is given to an alumnus/alumna of George Mason University in recognition of his/her continuous and exceptional service to the university and the community at large. - MASON ALUMNI IN TAIWAN GATHERED TOGETHER for a meeting and dinner with university president Alan Merten on November 4 in Taipei City where they were formally recognized as the Taiwan International Alumni Chapter, the Association's first international chapter. The president just returned from a three-week trip to Asia, including stops in Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei, and Seoul, during which he visited universities and talked with government officials.
- ON DECEMBER 4, THE MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM will face off against the University of Maryland Terrapins and on December 5, Mason will play either the George Washington University Colonials in a consolation game or the Michigan State Spartans in a championship game. Tickets are available for Mason alumni for the BB&T Classic, to be held at MCI Center. This is the 10th anniversary of the BB&T Classic and the first time in the history of the tournament that Mason has been invited. The entire university community is hopeful for a solid turnout and support from Mason alumni. Tickets are $75.50 and include entry to all 4 games at the club level and 2 pre-game receptions. - THE GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION WILL CELEBRATE GEORGE MASON'S 279TH BIRTHDAY on Saturday, December 11, at his historic home, Gunston Hall Plantation. The event will start at 12:00 noon with a house tour and/or time to explore the treasures of the Visitor Center library. A delicious lunch of Brunswick stew, salad, bread/rolls, and birthday cake will then be served in the Ann Mason Room. After lunch, Mason alumna Susan Hardenburgh, BA History '04, will explain her work with the Gunston Hall Archaeology Department and then will give a tour of the site. Cost is $20 per person and tickets are limited, so please reserve now by contacting Andy Ackley at aackley@gmu.edu or 703-993-8739.

- MORE THAN 90 PEOPLE ATTENDED THE FIRST COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES (CAS) faculty meeting of the 2004-05 academic year. The main item on the agenda was a proposal to create two separate colleges: a college of science, to be formed by merging the CAS science departments with the School of Computational Sciences, and a college of humanities, social sciences, and interdisciplinary studies.

- EFFORTS AT GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY IN RECENT YEARS TO RETAIN MORE STUDENTS HAVE BEEN PAYING OFF. According to the Office of Institutional Research, Mason's first-year student "persistence rates" for first-time, baccalaureate degree-seeking freshmen have climbed from 75.6 percent in1999 to 81.2 percent in 2003. This means that a greater number of full-time freshmen are remaining at George Mason as they move into their sophomore year.

- THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY (DHS) has awarded a $2 million grant to George Mason's College of Nursing and Health Science (CNHS), in partnership with George Washington University's graduate nursing program, to develop training that will prepare nurses to respond to injuries from weapons of mass destruction (WMD). The grant was announced at a press conference on October 21 on the Fairfax campus.

- AS PART OF THE UNIVERSITY'S COMMITMENT TO THE BIOSCIENCES, George Mason plans to build a biodefense research facility near the Prince William Campus and to seek $25 million from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to fund construction of the facility.

- WALKING INTO PROFESSOR MICHAEL BEHRMANN'S OFFICE, one is immediately greeted by an array of carefully sculpted faces looking down from the walls. Behrmann's office in Krug Hall is full of masks: dark wooden masks from Africa, Inuit masks from Alaska, and carnival masks from New Orleans and Latin America. The variety and quantity of these masks, along with statues acquired from around the globe and a Tibetan rug displayed on the floor, make his office one of the most unique at George Mason.

- RECENT COYOTE SIGHTINGS WITHIN THE CAPITAL BELTWAY have come as a surprise to many. But to George Mason professor Larry Rockwood, Environmental Science and Policy, and his team of graduate student researchers, the news isn't all that surprising. Rockwood and his team have been studying coyotes since 2001 as close as Quantico Marine Base, just 36 miles south of Washington, D.C.

- THREE GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY SOCCER PLAYERS received Colonial Athletic Association accolades for their efforts during the 2004 season as announced by the conference office Thursday night at the banquet on the eve of the semifinals and the finals of the CAA Men's Soccer Championship. Team members John O'Hara, Teba McKnight, and Brian Barry-Austin were all honored at the annual banquet.

- LAST SEASON'S GEORGE MASON MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM proved its mettle from start to finish, accomplishing feats that no other Patriot basketball team had ever done. Shy of reaching its ultimate goal of a Colonial Athletic Association Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance, Mason's 2003-04 team set several gears in motion, both locally and nationally, as it continues to move to a point of sustained growth and excellence.

- SUCCESS IS A WORD THAT DESCRIBES GEORGE MASON'S SWIMMING PROGRAMS. Entering their sixth year of existence, the women have won three-straight Colonial Athletic Association Championships to tie the conference record for most championships won in a row, while the Patriot men placed second in 2004 for their best finish in school history.
