ERIC SMEBY'S IDEA FOR HIS MS IN TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT CAPSTONE PROJECT was not the winner. But the idea launched a partnership with two teammates in what may become a lucrative side business. Smeby and his team developed a web site, www.FindingDaycares.com, to help parents in Virginia research childcare options.

JOIN IN THE CELEBRATION OF GEORGE MASON'S 280TH BIRTHDAY on Saturday, December 3. The Alumni Association sponsors an annual event to honor the December 11, 1725 birth of George Mason, our university’s namesake. This year's event will be a visit to Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, one of Mr. Mason’s contemporaries in Virginia public life. Space is limited. Prices are $28 per adult, $23 per child (7th-10th grade), and $15 per child (6th grade and younger) and include bus transportation, lunch at Michie Tavern, and admission to Monticello.

POPULAR MUSIC COMPOSER MARVIN HAMLSCH, who appeared at the Center for the Arts over the weekend, sat in for an informal discussion with George Mason music students this past week. Music faculty members Tony Maiello and Stan Engebretson moderated the class. |
WHAT WOULD NORTHERN VIRGINIA BE WITHOUT GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY? While the answer to this question is not clear-cut, a new study by Stephen Fuller, School of Public Policy professor, shows that the university's total economic impact to the Commonwealth of Virginia in fiscal year 2005 was $1.6 billion with the Northern Virginia region receiving almost $600 million.

"ALTHOUGH TB IS PREVENTABLE AND CURABLE, it has re-emerged as a significant health problem in the United States, particularly among Latino immigrants," says Rita Ailinger, professor of nursing with the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS), formerly the College of Nursing and Health Science. To combat the problem, Ailinger will conduct a pilot study, “Cultural Intervention for Latinos with TB Infection,” under a National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Nursing Research grant.

THE SCHOOL OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING (IT&E) celebrated its 20th anniversary recently, culminating in an announcement of a $10 million gift from Ernst and Sara Volgenau. The gift is the largest individual contribution in the history of the university and kicks off the newly named Volgenau School of IT&E's $20 million fund-raising campaign.

IN SEPTEMBER, RAE ROBERTS, DIRECTOR OF MASON'S FOUNDATION PROGRAM on the Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) Campus in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and her staff began their first semester of classes teaching students how to communicate successfully and comfortably in English in an academic setting.

MASON'S COMPUTER SCIENCE DEPARTMENT WILL OFFER A NEW BS in Applied Computer Science, the first of its kind among state universities in Virginia, starting in the spring semester. This new program is supported by major IT corporations in the Washington, D.C., area, indicating the employment demand for computational experts who also have strong preparation in other disciplines.

THE GEORGE MASON MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM is slated to have a minimum of six regular season games broadcast on television in the mid-Atlantic region, while the women's team will have one regular season contest broadcast locally during the 2005-06 season.

THE GEORGE MASON WRESTLING TEAM opened its 2005-06 season with several solid performances at the New Jersey Open on November 13. Five Patriots took home top honors while others had solid starts to the season. No team scores were recorded for the event. George Mason returns to action next Saturday, November 19 at the Navy Classic in Annapolis, Md.

COMPETITION CONCLUDED AT THE COLONIAL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION four-team swimming and diving pod meet at Davidson College. In the final team standings, George Mason's men's team posted head-to-head wins over Davidson College, College of Charleston and Drexel University, while the Patriots on the women's side defeated Drexel and Davidson, but fell to Charleston by one point.

SENIOR ANTHONY NOREIGA BECAME THE FIRST MEN'S SOCCER PLAYER in George Mason history to be named Colonial Athletic Association Defender of the Year, which was voted on by the league's head coaches and announced Thursday evening at the men's soccer banquet in Norfolk, Va. Noreiga anchored a Patriot defense that recorded five shutouts this season, including four in CAA play.
