New Orleans Jazz Orchestra—Home for the Holidays


Come out to the Center for the Arts this holiday season with family and friends and receive a special alumni discount of 15% off the Home for the Holidays concert on December 12. Irvin Mayfield, Grammy-nominated trumpeter, composer, and the cultural ambassador for the City of New Orleans, leads the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra in a festive holiday program that evokes the wonderful sounds and celebratory joie de vivre of their beloved city. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, this spirited 16-piece band became a beacon for the rich cultural traditions of a troubled city. MORE>

Provost Reports on State of Mason Academics

Mason and Smithsonian National Zoo Partnership

Multidisciplinary faculty members from Mason’s Center for Conservation Studies and the Zoo’s Center for Conservation Education and Sustainability are launching Smithsonian-Mason Global Conservation Education Studies, a program that will provide academic opportunities for up to 50 undergraduate students per semester and accommodate an additional 60 participants in the professional training and certificate programs that the partnership will offer. Mason Receives $1.5 Million Gift for Islamic Studies Chair

The International Institute for Islamic Thought (IIIT) recently made a generous donation to help Mason recruit a leading senior scholar to serve as an endowed chair in Islamic studies. The gift will allow Mason to build upon the rich Islamic culture present in its diverse student body, faculty and the surrounding communities and position the university as a leading authority in the field of Islamic studies. Master's International Program Links with Peace Corps

"Some people dream of being president while growing up," says Adrianne Brakefield, a Mason graduate student in political science. "I dreamt of being a Peace Corps volunteer." Thanks to an innovative program at Mason, Brakefield was not only able to achieve her lifelong goal when she returned from 27 months in Romania last summer, but she was able to earn her master's degree in political science at the same time. CAA Men's Soccer CAA Champs; NCAA Tournament Game

With a win against the Northeastern Huskies last weekend, Mason earned their fifth conference title in program history and clinched the CAA's automatic berth in the 2008 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship. The first round of action takes place at George Mason Stadium on Friday, November 21 at 7 p.m. against the University of Pennsylvania. MORE>

Join the Patriot Club and Mason Athletics at Brion's Grille for a pre-game gathering starting at 5 p.m. Friday bar specials are available for all Mason fans. Come out to support the Patriots, and we look forward to seeing you there!

Men's Basketball Television Schedule

George Mason men's basketball games will be broadcast on television at least 20 times for the third straight season with 20 games scheduled during the 2008-09 campaign. SCHEDULE>

 


Mason Helps Establish Academy of International Sport

Just as the business world is becoming increasingly global, so too is the sports world. In an effort to provide students with an opportunity to study international sport and facilitate international sport research, Mason’s Center for Sport Management is partnering with Aarhus University in Denmark to establish the Academy of International Sport.
