THE ALUMNI CHAPTER OF THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION & HUMAN DEVELOPMENT will sponsor their first dinner event on Monday, November 6, at Brion's Grille in the University Mall at 6:00 p.m. Ann Rieger, a social worker from Fairfax County Child Protective Services will speak about the Befriend a Child Program, and CEHD alumni member, Nancy Portee, will share her experiences as a volunteer in the program. Guests are also welcome to attend the free Vision Series lecture immediately following at Mason's Center for the Arts.

THE ALUMNI CHAPTER OF THE COLLEGE OF VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS invites all alumni and family to a pre-concert Brunch on Sunday, November 12 at noon before the Bayanihan Philippine National Dance Company performance at 2:00 p.m. in the Concert Hall. A family friendly ticket price of $22 for adults and $10 for children (12 and under) includes brunch and the performance.

MASON ALUMNI NIGHT AT THE WASHINGTON CAPITALS GAME IS DECEMBER 2! A limited number of tickets are available to alumni at a significant discount for the game against the Buffalo Sabres. Tickets are $35 and game time is 8:00 p.m. at the Verizon Center. Payment via cash, check, or credit card (Visa, M/C, Amex) are all accepted. THE ANNUAL BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION OF UNIVERSITY NAMESAKE, George Mason, will be held on Saturday, December 2, from noon until 3:00 p.m. aboard the Miss Mallory, a private charter boat that will sail from the Alexandria City Marina.
A delicious buffet lunch and birthday cake will be provided during a tour guide narration of the sights and monuments along the Potomac River. Alumni are encouraged to bring family and friends, but reservations are limited to the first 50 to sign up and pay. Cost is $35.

GEORGE MASON WON TWO 2006 GOVERNOR'S TECHNOLOGY AWARDS presented at the Commonwealth of Virginia Information Technology Symposium in Roanoke on Sept. 11. The awards program honors outstanding achievements and recognizes innovative technology initiatives in the public sector throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. Award submissions were evaluated on innovation, access, technological merit, metrics, and success by the members of Virginia’s Council on Technology Services.

"SHAME AND GUILT: THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY," will be presented by June Tangney, professor of psychology, on Monday, November 6, at 8:00 p.m. in the Fairfax Campus Concert Hall, as part of the year-long Vision Lecture Series. Tangney will discuss how shame and guilt are frequently mentioned in the same breath as moral emotions that inhibit destructive, socially unacceptable behaviors. Alumni and guests are welcome to attend this free event, but tickets are required.

THIS YEAR MARKS THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF ALAN MERTEN as president of George Mason University. In 1996, George Mason University had 24,368 students. Today it has 30,500. In 1996, the university's budget was $243 million. Now it is $530 million. In 1996, 2,885 people worked at George Mason. Today there are well over 4,000. Not only have the numbers increased at George Mason – the buildings, the people, student enrollment, the programs – but during the Mertens' tenure, the intangibles, such as a spirit of entrepreneurship and excitement, have endured.

GEORGE MASON'S COLLEGE OF SCIENCE (COS) is already growing and initiating changes, even though it has not yet shed its feeling of "newness." The principal changes are the enhancement of 10 research centers and 10 academic departments to advance the college's various academic priorities. COS is one of the results of the university’s earlier decision to reorganize its College of Arts and Sciences and School of Computational Sciences.

THE RETENTION RATE FOR STUDENTS AT GEORGE MASON CONTINUES TO IMPROVE, Provost Peter Stearns said at a forum regarding the state of Mason academics held on the Fairfax Campus. In data from the 2004-05 academic year, the rate for freshmen who returned to Mason was 85.9 percent. That was the sixth straight year of a retention increase at the university. "We are clearly doing very well," said Stearns, who added that the rate was around 74 percent a decade ago.

AT ITS REGULAR MEETING IN EARLY OCTOBER, MASON'S BOARD OF VISITORS (BOV) approved four new degree programs and a name change for the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. The degrees approved by the BOV will be initiated in the fall of 2007 if approved by the State Council for Higher Education in Virginia.

COACH JIM LARRANAGA SAYS THE RUN TO LAST SPRING'S NCAA FINAL FOUR was "three weeks of pure adrenaline." But now, "Let’s get excited about this year’s team." If the coach is worried about high expectations and the loss of three starters to graduation – top scorers Lamar Butler, Jai Lewis and Tony Skinn – he isn’t showing it. Leaning back in his office chair, comfy in a green-and-gray sweat suit, he’s still glowing like, well, Kryptonite.

SIX FORMER ATHLETES AND ONE COACHING LEGEND were formally inducted into the newly formed George Mason Men's Soccer Hall of Fame on April 29, 2006, and were honored at halftime during the James Madison game on Oct. 22. Among the inductees are former head coach, Gordon Bradley (1985-2000), Mike Reynolds (1982-85), Fred Thompson (1982-85), Tamir Linhart (1991-93), Eduardo Lima (1996-2000), Dennis Hamlett (1989-91) and Martin Dunphy (1986-89).

THE GEORGE MASON WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM has had its share of All-Americans and players who have gone on to play for the U.S. National Team but this past week, one former Patriot earned an extremely elite honor as Lisa Gmitter was selected to the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer 25th Anniversary Team. The team will be honored Nov. 30 in Cary, N.C., site of the 2006 championship.

The men's basketball team will take on the Bucknell University Bisons on Sunday, December 3 for a 1:30 p.m. game at the Verizon Center in the annual BB&T Classic.
