- GEORGE MASON FINDS ITSELF IN THE COMPANY OF YALE, PRINCETON, COLUMBIA, SARAH LAWRENCE, AND HARVARD when it comes to instruction in the art of writing across the disciplines. According to U.S. News and World Report's America's Best Colleges 2005 Edition, Mason and these other colleges "typically make writing a priority at all levels of instruction and across the curriculum."

- THE CENTER FOR GLOBAL STUDIES (CGS) AND THE ISLAMIC STUDIES interdisciplinary minor program at George Mason, which has increased interest in Islam and its role in both the world and current events, will cosponsor the 33rd annual conference of the Association of Muslim Social Scientists (AMSS) on the Arlington Campus, September 24-26.

- ZOOLOGISTS AREN'T SURE WHY more than half of the female animals at the National Zoo don't go through normal reproductive cycles, but with the help of George Mason's Environmental Science and Policy (ESP) students, they may find out. This problem is one of many being studied by students at the zoo's Conservation and Research Center (CRC) in Front Royal, Va.

- AT A TOWN HALL MEETING YESTERDAY, PROVOST PETER STEARNS AND SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT MAURICE SCHERRENS presented an overview of academic and administrative plans to the university community for 2010 that they plan to finalize by December and present to the university's Board of Visitors in January.

- IN AN ONGOING EFFORT TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH CAREER ADVICE AND SUPPORT, the School of Management (SOM) at George Mason is presenting a series of panels this fall titled "Ask the Professionals," featuring graduate speakers in different areas of study. Although the program has been offered previously, the coordinators last semester added sponsorship with academic clubs.

- ALL ALUMNI ARE INVITED TO RETURN TO THE FAIRFAX CAMPUS for a special tour on October 2 from noon until 2 p.m. The tour is offered by the newly formed Student Alumni Chapter and will be followed by punch and cookies in the Office of Alumni Affairs. - ALUMNI ARE INVITED TO JOIN FACULTY, STAFF, AND STUDENTS on a Spring Break 2005 trip to Sicily, Italy with an optional extension to Rome. The focus of this trip will be the history and culture of Southern Italy and the dates are March 12-20 (Rome extension until March 23). - DUE TO THE IMMENSE POPULARITY OF THE EVENT in the past, the Alumni Association will again offer horse-guided trail rides at the Marriott Ranch in Hume, Va., on Sunday, October 17. Ninety-minute rides are $35 for Mason alumni and payment can be made via check or credit card to Darren Silvis (dsilvis@gmu.edu or 703-993-3847) in the Office of Alumni Affairs. PATRIOT SPORTS
- FORMER GEORGE MASON TRACK STANDOUT MAURICE WIGNALL came within a hair's breadth of winning a medal at the 2004 Olympic Games. Competing for his home country of Jamaica, Wignall finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles, missing a bronze medal by .01 of a second. Anier Garcia of Cuba, the 2000 Olympic gold medalist, took home the bronze with a time of 13.20 seconds. Wignall crossed the line in 13.21.

- MASON'S JUNIOR STEPHAN DUFILS, won his third round Flight 1 singles match in two sets, 7-5, 3-0 (def. inj) against John Snead from James Madison and placed third in the Washington and Lee Invitational. Senior Tim Bainton won his consolation match in his Flight 1 singles match, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 against Brad Stillwagon from Washington and Lee.

- THE GEORGE MASON CROSS COUNTRY SQUADS opened the season on Saturday, September 11 at the Towson Invitational and the men's team was paced by some veterans while the women's team received strong performances by some first-year student-athletes. Junior Dennis Moriarity led the men's team, finished 36th overall with a time of 28 minutes, 15 seconds.

- MASON ALUMNI WHO SHOW THEIR PATRIOT PRIDE by wearing green and gold will only pay $1 for the following women's volleyball home matches: 10/2 vs. JMU, 10/23 vs. William & Mary, and 11/13 vs. Delaware. All games begin at 7:00pm in the PE building on the Fairfax campus.
