AS PART OF HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH, the Alumni Association will again sponsor a networking reception for alumni, faculty, staff, and students. The event will be held in Alumni Atrium of Mason Hall from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 4. The key-note speaker is Dennis Garcia, President of Potomac Management Group, Inc. and member of Mason’s Board of Visitors. All are invited to participate in the event. Light refreshments will be served.

THE BACHELOR OF INDIVIDUALIZED STUDY (BIS) DEPARTMENT AND ITS ALUMNI will celebrate 30 years of "learning without limits" (1975-2005) at a special event on Sunday, October 9 in Alumni Atrium of Mason Hall, starting with a reception at 5:00 p.m. and followed by a 7:00 p.m. performance in the Center for the Arts. | THE COLLEGE OF NURSING AND HEALTH SCIENCE is proposing a significant expansion of mission and related change in organization and name. The proposed changes have been approved by the college faculty and by the Department of Social Work, the units most involved. A Town Hall meeting will be held Thursday, Sept. 29, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Fairfax Campus, Mason Hall, Room D3, to discuss the proposals. For more information, call 703-993-8776. |

GEORGE MASON WILL ESTABLISH A NEW CAMPUS IN LOUDOUN COUNTY on 123 acres of property located near the intersection of Routes 50 and 659. The property is being donated to the university by Greenvest LLC, a Virginia developer. The expansion, says university President Alan Merten, addresses a growing demand in Loudoun County for higher education and enhances George Mason’s own “distributed university” concept in Northern Virginia.

MASON HAS BEEN AWARDED $25 MILLION from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, for construction of a Regional Biocontainment Laboratory at the Prince William Campus in Manassas. The successful application, proposed by George Mason’s National Center for Biodefense and Infectious Diseases, has resulted in the largest research award in the university’s history.

GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY HAS ADMITTED DISPLACED STUDENTS who were affected because of Hurricane Katrina's disastrous effects on college campuses and initiated several projects to assist students and faculty with ties to the Gulf Coast region, as well as assisting in overall hurricane relief efforts.

THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION RANKINGS FOR RESEARCH expenditures by discipline for fiscal year 2003, the most recent year reported, have just been released. For the field of political science, which includes public policy, public administration and public affairs, George Mason moved up to fourth place in federally financed R&D expenditures.

MASON ALUMNA AND WOMEN'S BASKETBALL STAND-OUT, Jen Derevjanik, wrapped up her second season with the WNBA's Connecticut Sun this month as the Sun competed in the WNBA Finals for the second-straight season. According to espn.com, Derevjanik was placed in the starting line-up for just the second time this season as the Sun's starting point guard, Lindsay Whalen, was out with an injury.

GEORGE MASON PROFILES FORMER PLAYER PAM (BAUGHMAN) CORNELL in the `Where are they now?' series commemorating the 20th anniversary of the 1985 NCAA Championship women's soccer team. Cornell, a three-time All-American, was a member of the inaugural freshman class for women's soccer in 1982. In the first four years of the program, the Patriots recorded a 63-14-7 overall record, four visits to the NCAA Tournament, including National Champion Runner-up in 1983 and National Champions in 1985.

MARK WEADER, THE TOP ASSISTANT COACH FOR MASON'S WRESTLING TEAM for the past six seasons, was named interim head coach of the program for the upcoming 2005-06 campaign, Assistant Vice-President/Director of Athletics Tom O'Connor announced. A new assistant coach will be named in the future. Weader, a 1999 graduate of George Mason, takes over the program following the resignation of former head coach Brian Shaffer, who guided the Patriots to three Colonial Athletic Association championships during his 10 seasons at the helm.

GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY ATHLETIC TEAMS HAVE JOINED TOGETHER to assist Hurricane Katrina victims through fundraising efforts during the weekend of September 30 to October 2. The Patriot student-athletes will collect donations at the men's soccer game against VCU on Friday, September 30 at 7 p.m., and the women's soccer game against James Madison on Sunday, October 2 at 1 p.m. In addition, the Patriots soccer head coaches Greg Andrulis and Diane Drake will team up to conduct a soccer clinic from 1-2:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 1.

MIDNIGHT MADNESS is slated for Friday, October 14 at 11:15 p.m. at the Patriot Center. This annual basketball event officially launches the start of the 2005-06 basketball season. All alumni are encouraged to cheer on the Patriots! The event is free. |
