The new Art and Visual Technology building for the Fairfax campus has already won its first design award, and it is still just on paper.

UNIVERSITY CAREER SERVICES IS HOSTING A TWO DAY JOB FAIR on October 4 & 5 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the Fairfax campus in Dewberry Hall of the Johnson Center. Alumni are welcome to attend. This job fair is designed for those looking for entry level positions. Employers are seeking prospective employees with 5 years of experience or less. Registration is not required.

MASON'S EIGHTH ANNUAL LAW ALUMNI GOLF TOURNAMENT will be held October 21 at Penderbrook Golf Club in Fairfax. All alumni are invited to play. Those interested in playing or who have questions about the event can e-mail law alumnus David Reed at dreed@applefcu.org. All proceeds from the tournament go to a student scholarship fund supported by alumni.

MPA ALUMNI ARE INVITED TO ATTEND AN ALUMNI CHAPTER INTEREST MEETING on Monday, September 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Fairfax County Government Center (Conference Room 6, located on the main level).
The MPA alumni chapter is gearing up for a new year and is looking for alumni to serve on the board! The chapter hosts two events per year, but would like to explore ideas to expand participation with the department and alumni affairs. |

GET INVOLVED WITH NATIONAL MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY, Saturday October 28: Mason alumni looking to volunteer in their community are encouraged to join other alumni as part of Volunteer Fairfax's VolunteerFest. Held in conjunction with "National Make a Difference Day," VolunteerFest allows groups of volunteers to help in the community. The George Mason University Alumni Association has committed to providing volunteers at the Alzheimer's Family Day Center in Fairfax.

TAKE A TOUR OF THE FAIRFAX CAMPUS on Saturday, November 4! Alumni and their friends and family are invited to tour the Fairfax campus. Those who haven't visited campus recently will see firsthand that there are a lot of changes going on. The campus tour, led by a current Mason student, will begin at 11:00 a.m. and last about an hour to an hour and a half.

THE ALUMNI CHAPTER OF THE COLLEGE OF VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS invites all alumni and family to a pre-concert Brunch on Sunday, November 12 at noon before the Bayanihan Philippine National Dance Company performance at 2:00 p.m. in the Concert Hall on the Fairfax Campus. A family friendly ticket price including brunch and the performance is available for all CVPA alumni.

THE ANNUAL BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION OF UNIVERSITY NAMESAKE, George Mason, will be held on Saturday, December 2, from noon until 3:00 p.m. aboard the Miss Mallory, a private charter boat that will sail from the Alexandria City Marina.
A delicious buffet lunch and birthday cake will be provided during a tour guide narration of the sights and monuments along the Potomac River. Alumni are encouraged to bring family and friends, but reservations are limited to the first 50 to sign up and pay. Cost is $35.

RICHARD FLORIDA, THE OMER L. AND NANCY HIRST PROFESSOR OF PUBLIC POLICY, and the author of the best-selling The Rise of the Creative Class, published in 2002, and its 2005 follow-up, The Flight of the Creative Class, will address "The Flight of the Creative Class: The New Global Competition for Talent" on Monday, September 25 to lead off the yearlong lecture series. The lecture series is free and open to the public, but tickets are required.

WHAT BEGAN AS A TWO-DAY LITERARY EVENT IN 1999, organized by George Mason University and the City of Fairfax, has expanded into a community-based, region-wide festival bringing together people of all ages - more than 8,000 in 2005 - and the festival grows on, thanks to generous partnerships and sustained community interest. This year's "Fall for the Book" festival runs from September 27 through October 5.

WHERE ELSE WOULD ONE STUDY THE EFFECT OF DIVERSITY on higher education but at a campus that is one of the most diverse in the nation? George Mason University has that distinction, and for the past three years, a group of faculty and staff from across the university has been meeting to explore this issue. The Diversity Research Group (DRG) was convened three years ago to explore diversity-related issues.

GEORGE MASON'S DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WORK, housed within the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS), has reached an important industry milestone by receiving national accreditation from the Council on Social Work Education for its Master of Social Work (MSW) program. George Mason's MSW program offers the only national program specializing exclusively in the "macro" practice of social work.

MASON ALUMNI ANOUSHEH ANSARI, BS Computer and Electrical Engineering '89, has always had her eyes on the stars. On September 2, she took another step closer to the realization of that dream when she entered quarantine in Baikonur, Kazakhstan, in preparation for the launch at the Baikonur Cosmodrome. She will be traveling for 10 days with NASA astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin. During her time at the space station, Ansari also will be conducting a number of experiments for the European Space Agency.

ENGLISH PROFESSOR LORRAINE BROWN HAS LONG TAUGHT such playwrights as Tony Kushner, Suzan-Lori Parks and Naomi Wallace, but one of her fall 2006 courses places these authors in a new light. She calls the course "Memory Theater" after a book she recently encountered, "Memory-Theater and Postmodern Drama" by Jeanette R. Malkin. In addition to plays by Kushner, Parks and Wallace, the syllabus for Memory Theater includes works by Samuel Beckett, Sam Shepard and Timberlake Wertenbaker.

IT'S TIME FOR MASON HOOPS AGAIN! Mason alumni are invited to gather at Brion's Grille on Friday, October 13 prior to Midnight Madness to begin celebrating the upcoming basketball season. Brion's Grille will provide happy hour specials throughout the evening. Doors will open at the Patriot Center for Midnight Madness at 10:30 p.m. with festivities beginning at 11 p.m.

UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES AND SPECIAL COLLECTION AND ARCHIVES DEPARTMENT is working on a new project that memorializes Mason's historic run to the Final Four. The whole department enthusiastically threw itself into the project beginning after the March 17 Michigan State Game. The project is like no other for the Special Collections and Archives Department. "This was one (project) we were so excited about," says Anne Hakes, archivist and university records manager.

THE 2006-07 MEN'S BASKETBALL SEASON BEGINS in fewer than 10 weeks, and now there are mini-season ticket plans to choose from. This year, Mason will offer a three-game plan and a six-game plan. GEORGE MASON'S MEN'S SOCCER TEAM (4-2) extended its win streak to three as the Patriots downed George Washington (2-3-1) at the Mount Vernon Athletics Complex in a non-conference match-up last Saturday afternoon. The Patriots will return to action when they host Northeastern this Saturday at 7:00 p.m. for Mason's first Colonial Athletic Association match-up of the season.
