President Alan Merten cuts a ribbon to officially open the two new residence halls, Blue Ridge and Shenandoah, in the northeast sector development. The new buildings accommodate about 360 students.



Hundreds of tiny U.S. flags recalled the victims of September 11, 2001, in a silent memorial on the Fairfax Campus last week.

Interested in learning more about credit scores, credit reports, and other credit issues? Discover how you can use credit to your advantage and how credit can hurt you in the long run. Join fellow alumni for "Credit 101" a FREE seminar presented by Apple Federal Credit Union Tuesday, October 9. The course will go into both positive and negative aspects of credit.

Fourth Annual Fairfax Campus Tour


Join your Alumni Association for the fourth annual campus tour of the Fairfax campus grounds on Saturday, October 27 at 10:00 a.m. Since opening in 1964, the Fairfax Campus has grown tremendously. Led by an admissions student tour guide, the 90-minute tour will end at Damon's Grill in Student Union Building I.

Mason Teams Up for AIDS Walk Washington 2007


Join Mason's ongoing commitment to the fight against AIDS by joining the Mason team for AIDS Walk Washington 2007 on Saturday, October 6! Last year, the Mason team raised over $10,000 and brought 200 faculty, staff, students, and alumni to the starting line for the annual AIDS Walk. Everyone who joins the team gets a free Mason team t-shirt!

Roger WilkinsFirst of Eight 'Vision Series' Lectures on Sep. 24


On September 24, the first of eight Vision Series lectures kicks off with Roger Wilkins, Robinson Professor, History and American Culture. Look for the Alumni Association in the lobby prior to Wilkins' presentation, "Racial Equality in America: Will the Struggle Ever End?" at 8:00 p.m. in the Concert Hall on the Fairfax Campus. The lecture is free but tickets are required and the program will followed by an informal reception with the speaker.

"Where Am I?" Winner Announced


Congratulations to Yathrib Elhillali '05, of Woodbridge, Va., for correctly answering last month's MasonWire "Where Am I?" contest. Yathrib correctly identified the sculpture, titled "Arch III and Landmark," which is located between the Center for the Arts and Mason Hall on the Fairfax Campus.

University Career Services Hosts 20th Anniversary Job Fair


Alumni are cordially invited to attend the 20th Anniversary Job Fair hosted by University Career Services on October 3 & 4. University Career Services hosts a two-day campus-wide job and internship fair twice a year, which attract organizations that have internship, co-op, full-time, part-time career related and/or summer job openings. Over 92 employers and more than 1200 visitors attend the event each day.

Arlington Campus Plans Community-Friendly Public Plaza


Mason community members, Arlington County government officials and local residents recently gathered to discuss the future of the Arlington Campus. As the second phase of a three-phase development is scheduled to begin in late September, developers specifically asked for community input as they begin designing Mason's Public Plaza. Situated on Fairfax Drive, the plaza will include an outdoor café, art, fountains and seating areas.

Mason Hosts Annual "Fall for the Book" Festival


Alumni are invited to the annual "Fall for the Book" festival from September 23 to 28. Created in 1999, Fall for the Book has expanded into a week-long, multiple-venue, regional festival. This year's featured presenters include Robert Draper, author of the recently-published "Dead Certain: The Presidency of George W. Bush." Bestselling novelist and memoirist Mitch Albom, recipient of the Fairfax Prize, and bestselling novelist Jonathan Lethem, honored with the Mason Award, are among many featured guests.

Bookstore Sells 'Green' Apparel and Supplies


The Fairfax Campus bookstore is now carrying eco-friendly and socially conscious clothing from edun LIVE, a clothing line whose entire manufacturing process, from growing the cotton to shipping the product, occurs in sub-Saharan Africa. In addition to the clothing, the bookstore is carrying a line of products that are eco-friendly, including notebooks, index cards, and energy efficient light bulbs.

University to Break Ground for Biomedical Research Lab


Mason will break ground for a biomedical research lab that will catapult the university into the ranks of leading facilities working to combat bioterrorism. Mason's Biomedical Research Laboratory (BRL), to be built adjacent to the Prince William Campus, will contain laboratories where Mason researchers will develop and test the next generation of vaccines, treatments and diagnostics to protect citizens against biological terrorism and infectious diseases.

Fall Semester Brings New Construction, Safety Measures in Place


Change is a constant at Mason as students returning to campus this fall will find new construction and new safety measures in place. Newly opened residence halls, which are part of the Northeast Sector development, opened 500 additional spaces for on-campus housing. Mason has launched "Mason Alert," a new information system designed to give Mason community members quick access to emergency announcements. The Aquatic and Fitness Center and West Hall are both undergoing extensive renovations as well.

Pre-Midnight Madness Party Launches Basketball Season


Get ready to experience Mason Madness! Join the Mason community for the kick off to the basketball season on Friday, October 12. The bookstore will be selling Mason gear. Light refreshments will be provided and wings will be provided by Buffalo Wing University. The party begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Patriot Center's south entrance. Doors open at 9:00 p.m. Rain location is the east concourse.

Women's Soccer Has Four-Match Win Streak Snapped at Maryland


The Mason women's soccer team brought their four-game winning streak to Maryland, but after a hard fought battle, the Terrapins broke that on Sunday night as the Patriots suffered a 1-0 loss. It was the first time since Sept. 2 that the Patriots allowed a goal. Mason (4-2-0) took just one fewer shot on goal than Maryland but the Terrapins (4-1-1) had six corner to just two for Mason.

Former Patriot Wins WNBA Championship With Mercury


Former Patriots standout Jen Derevjanik '04 became just the third Mason alum to win an American professional sports title this week when her Phoenix Mercury team defeated the Detroit Shock to claim the 2007 WNBA Championship. The Mercury's 108-92 victory on Sunday gave it a three games to two series victory over the Shock, the defending league champions. Derevjanik joins Rich Kotschau '97 and Chris Widger '92 on the list of Patriots to succeed at the highest level professionally.

Women's Volleyball Splits Final Day of USF Invitational


The George Mason women's volleyball squad played two matches on Saturday as part of the University of South Florida Invitational, with the Patriots earning a 3-0 win over Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, before falling to the host Bulls, 3-1, later in the afternoon. Mason is back in action next Friday when they travel to rival James Madison to open up the Colonial Athletic Association schedule. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. from Harrisonburg.

Mason Teams with D.C. United to Offer Soccer Flex Plan Package


Mason and D.C. United of Major League Soccer have teamed up for the 2007 season to create a flex ticketing plan that allows fans to see two great games for the price of one. Flex plan tickets are $22 and fans can choose one D.C. United game and one George Mason game to attend. D.C. United offers a choice of four remaining home games at RFK Stadium, while Mason offers a choice of three remaining home games at George Mason Stadium.
