Scholarships
The George Mason University Alumni Association is committed to engaging students throughout their academic career to form a stronger bond with the university and the alumni body. The Alumni Association sponsors five student scholarships, which are awarded annually and represent a significant financial committment by the Alumni Association. The Peter C. Forame Student Leader Scholarship: $2,500
The Peter C. Forame Student Leader Scholarship was established by the friends and classmates of First Lieutenant Peter C. Forame after he died in action during the Vietnam War. Mr. Forame was a past president of student government at George Mason University who possessed outstanding academic and leadership skills. His involvement exemplified that of a well-rounded student who balanced the demands of academic life with those of extracurricular activities. The George Mason University Alumni Association endowed the scholarship so it could be awarded to deserving student leaders who demonstrate the ability to excel academically and still participate actively in university life. The GMU Alumni Association Peter C. Forame Student Leader Scholarship was endowed in 1995 and is awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student leader who demonstrates exemplary leadership skills in one or more registered student organizations without sacrificing academic commitment. It is given in recognition of the desirability and difficulty of balancing extracurricular and academic pursuits.
Criteria:
- Any full-time undergraduate student who has completed at least 30 credit hours at time of application. Transfer students must have completed at least 15 credits at George Mason University at time of application.
- Student must hold a leadership position in a registered student organization and possess outstanding leadership skills as evident by such factors as the organization’s development and success while under the student’s leadership.

The George Mason University Alumni Association Service Scholarship: $2,500
The George Mason University Alumni Association Service Scholarship was established in 2006 by the Alumni Association of George Mason University. The scholarship is awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate or graduate student who demonstrates a commitment to service within the university community while maintaining an exemplary academic record. It is given in recognition of the importance of the volunteer role in the university community.
Criteria:
- Any full-time undergraduate student who has completed at least 30 credit hours at George Mason University at time of application, any full-time transfer student who has completed at least 15 credits at George Mason University at time of application, or any full-time graduate student who has completed at least nine credit hours at George Mason University at time of application.
- A GPA of 3.0 or higher achieved while at George Mason University.
- Student must demonstrate exceptional university community service.

Black Scholars Endowed Scholarship: $1,500
The Black Scholars Endowed Scholarshipwas established by the Black Alumni Chapter of George Mason University in 2011 to provide funding for undergraduate students from an underrepresented student population with first preference to Black/African Heritage students. The scholarship is awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student who has completed at least one course within the African-American Studies minor; or has been an active or contributing member of a George Mason University student organization that promotes the advocacy and support of Black/African Heritage students.
Criteria:
- Any full-time undergraduate student that has completed at least 12 credit hours at time of application; may be an in-state or out-of-state student but must be U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- First preference given to Black/African Heritage students who have displayed academic excellence, community service and a commitment to diversity.
- A GPA of 3.0 or higher achieved while at George Mason University.
- Student must have completed at least one course within the African American Studies minor by the end of the Fall 2012 semester or have been an active and contributing member of a George Mason University student organization committed to diversity.

John C. and Louise P. Wood Undergraduate Scholarship: $2,500
The John C. and Louise P. Wood Undergraduate Scholarship was established in 1975 by the late John C. Wood. Mr. Wood overcame the challenges of blindness to serve as the mayor of the City of Fairfax from 1952 to 1963 and to become the first rector of the George Mason University Board of Visitors. Mr. Wood was instrumental in the development of George Mason University as an institution of higher learning in Northern Virginia, and in the acquisition of the land for the Fairfax Campus and the School of Law. The Wood Undergraduate Scholarship is awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student who has completed 30 credit hours at George Mason University (or transfer student with at least 15 credits at George Mason University) and demonstrates unusual motivation and ability in the pursuit of education and who has contributed to the development and welfare of George Mason University, the community, or both.
Criteria:
- Any full-time undergraduate student who has completed at least 30 credit hours at George Mason University at time of application. Transfer students must have completed at least 15 credits at George Mason University at time of application.
- A GPA of 3.0 or higher achieved while at George Mason University.
- Demonstrated commitment to academic related pursuits, university organizations, and/or community service.
- Demonstrated ability to overcome obstacles in the pursuit of education.

John C. And Louise P. Wood Graduate Scholarship: $2,500
The John C. and Louise P. Wood Graduate Scholarship was established by the GMU Alumni Association in November 1998. The scholarship is named in the memory of John C. Wood, former mayor of the City of Fairfax and the first rector of George Mason University, and his wife, Louise P. Wood, in recognition of their contributions to the university and the community. The Wood Graduate Scholarship is awarded to a full-time graduate student who has completed at least nine credit hours at George Mason University and demonstrates unusual motivation and ability in the pursuit of education, and who has contributed to the development and welfare of George Mason University, the community, or both.
Criteria:
- Any full-time graduate student who has completed at least nine credit hours at George Mason University at time of application.
- A GPA of 3.0 or higher achieved while at George Mason University.
- Demonstrated commitment to academic related pursuits, university organizations, and/or community service.
- Demonstrated ability to overcome obstacles in the pursuit of education.
