Greg Bicouvaris, BA Sociology ’89 was one of the voices of George Mason University in the 1980s. He was the first student in history to commentate the men’s home basketball matchups for all three Northern Virginia commercial network radio stations airing the games. He also commentated George Mason men’s basketball and other sports for WGMU, the university’s radio station, where he was the sports director.
His senior year he stepped in front of the GMU-TV cameras to host the Bickie Show, the name a nod to a sobriquet that never quite stuck. The show ran for two semesters, making him the first student to ever host a television program at George Mason.
Now, a lifetime of achievements later, Bicouvaris is being recognized for the broadcast career that bloomed at George Mason.
The owner of the Newport News, Virginia-based GJB Productions & Marketing has been selected as a 2025 inductee to the Athletic Hall of Fame of the Lower Virginia Peninsula, an honor previously bestowed upon former NFL quarterback Michael Vick and NASCAR driver Danny Edwards Jr.
GJB Production & Marketing was founded some 37 years ago when Bicouvaris was a rising senior at George Mason. The company offers various communications services, including television and radio commercial production.
A native of Newport News, he’s been on the map in his hometown and nearby Hampton Roads since 1988.
“That’s a lot of years since I’ve made my mark down here,” said Bicouvaris, who will be inducted along with seven others. He is the only inductee named to the hall of fame for broadcasting.
In all, he’s worked in on-air commentary for more than a dozen stations and behind the scenes for some 15 more. In July 2017, he collaborated with a local promoter and founded the Hampton Roads Sports Media Hall of Fame, which recognizes the career achievements of area sports journalists.
But he’s always wanted more out of his career than just sports. Looking back, Bicouvaris said, he’s definitely done that.
“I [always] knew I had a gift of gab … and wanted to reach people on a big scale. [I] wanted to make an impact in mass communications,” he said.
