Jonathan A. McElderry, BS ’06, knows the difference that a mentor can make. As the dean of student inclusive excellence and assistant professor at Elon University, he is dedicated to the success of students in higher education. “I strive to be somebody that I needed when I was younger,” he said.
McElderry was a first-generation student at George Mason University, where he learned how to navigate the challenges of higher education with a strategic mindset and with the guidance of mentors. “My whole higher education journey has been me trying to figure it out. I relied on the mentors who came into my life to help me succeed,” he said. “The community that I built while at George Mason was influential. I had a support system and I feel like it was a great place for me to really step into adulthood.”
During his time at George Mason, McElderry found role models as well as leadership opportunities through participation in organizations and clubs, including serving as the president of the Black Student Alliance. The skills he gained prepared him for his career, and ultimately, to make history.
McElderry has now added a new credential to his work at Elon: In February 2025, he started his one-year term as the 86th president of ACPA-College Student Educators International, an association of student affairs professionals. He is the first Elon University staff member to lead the national association of student affairs professionals.
“I understand firsthand the challenges that many students may face within higher education, so I carry this with great honor,” he said. “I want to create a space and provide resources where they feel supported and empowered.”
McElderry has chosen Mentoring with Purpose: Building Networks of Support in Higher Education as the theme for his presidency, showcasing his commitment to effective coaching within higher education and making sure that students and professionals feel that they are seen and valued. “I want to give back to the next generation,” said McElderry, recalling the peer counseling center where he worked while at George Mason. “From there,” he added, “I got matched with an upperclassman through Akoma Circle. They took me in my first year and helped me along the way.”
McElderry’s George Mason experience informs his work at Elon and through the ACPA, and he is committed to opening doors for the next generation by continuing his own tradition of mentorship. “There is so much power in legacy,” he said. “You never know what you may start that will continue for generations to come.”
