George Mason University has been a part of Joe Costantini’s life for over 50 years. He has a two year associate’s certificate, an MS in engineering, and a PhD in Information Technology from George Mason, as well as a BA and a MEd from the University of Virginia. While at the University, he met his wife, Carol, and they will soon celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Having raised 2 children, they now have four grandchildren. Costantini retired after 30 years in the Intelligence Community having worked at the NSA, DIA, CIA, and the FBI participating in the growth of a new field called cyber security. As a result of his work, Costantini received the Director of National Intelligence’ (DNI) Career Intelligence Medal (CIM) and the CIA Bronze Medal as well as 22 Exceptional Performance Appraisals and a CIA fellowship to George Mason to pursue a Doctorate in Information Technology. After his fellowship, he was offered a teaching position at GMU as an adjunct professor in Computer Security and found that he really enjoyed teaching interested adults. After retiring from the CIA, he secured a Visiting Professorship with a major commercial university and continued that for 13 years, retiring in 2017. Costantini now works part time as a subject matter expert (SME) for a small business. In those 51 years, Joe Costantini attended GMU for three degrees (AA, MS, and PhD), the University of Virginia for two degrees (BA and MEd), and has used that learning to teach others; contribute to a new and increasingly important field (cyber security), and raise a family. As he said, “I have been very fortunate, some would say blessed, in my career and I owe much of that blessing to GMU, its professors, and its programs. Thank you GMU.”
